In short, the JP disc has a ~50% higher video bitrate (34 mbps vs. 23 mbps) but has a 16-bit 6.1 channel JP audio track instead of the 24-bit 6.1 channel JP track on the US release, and also lacks the English dub (for what that's worth).

Do you know if the JP 2.0 disc sold individually is identical to the one sold in the box set?

It should be. The catalog number for the stand-alone 2.0 disc is BCXA-0100, which seems to match the disc bundled in the box set.

I don't understand, this thread was first started to post about the ORIGINAL Ghost in the Shell film getting a re-release on Blu-ray back in 2011, and for some reason people started posting pics of that shitty 2.0 Box...2.0. is awful and should be avoided.

Fortunately, as Bubblegum mentioned, you can import the Japanese BD of the original print which comes with English audio and subtitles. The 2.0 version is absolutely awful, don't buy that garbage.

That 2.0 box comes with the original, the same exact one you linked.

You're probably thinking of the Manga US release of GitS 2.0 there (which had the poor upscale contained on the same disc), as the separate GitS 1.0 disc in the 2.0 LE box set is same as the 2007 BD/DVD combo box per AV Watch and Bandia Visual's site.

GitS 2.0 came out 16 months after the original film's BD release, so it would make absolutely no sense to not reuse that pressing for the box set...

No, Einstein, it isn't. It's the same exact BD re-issue release you linked, hence why people were talking about that Japanese box set in this thread. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the crappy US release.

It seems that's the case. I hated 2.0 so much, that I had avoided all contact with it on BD and just assumed the original movie included on all the 2.0 releases contained the bad 1080i transfer or something. lol

I still don't understand how in the hell anyone could buy that 2.0 version and not the original real version of the movie on BD from Japan.

Look at all that piss filter, yuck..

People bought that specific one because of the stuff it came with. It came with the unaltered original in the highest quality you could buy (and that still holds true today), a soundtrack, a separate disc of extras, etc. all in a high quality box. Even if you're interested in only the original theatrical release, it's still the best overall package you can buy.

^^ This.

As for 1llusi0n's question as to why anyone would buy the single-disc edition of 2.0... it might be a question of cost for some. The Japanese blu-rays are kind of rich for the casual viewer's blood, and it seems the upcoming (September) UK steelbook may be the most cost-effective way to get the original release atm.

GITS can certainly look a lot better than it does right now on Blu-ray. The HDTV version despite its abundance of artefacting during fast motion is proof of that. I’m interested to see what the pq is like on the UK release to see if it addresses the softness, and more importantly, rampant crushed blacks that have plagued all releases before it.

Aw, what a deal! Though I'm not sure if it included the film strip. Nevertheless, I really want to kick myself in the head for missing out. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ghost-in-the...p2047675.l2557

We were actually discussing that auction in this thread; as it turns out the 2.0 disc and individual case that was sent out was the US version, not the JP disc that should've been in the set...

I see there is a new US release of the original version. Anyone know if it would look better than the Japanese version in the box set? The review here doesn't mention the JP release, only that it's better than the shitty US upscale. I remember the JP blu looking a lot better than the upscale, but still needing improvement. From the review my guess is the new one will look better, but would like to hear from someone with more knowledge.
If this US one is really a new transfer, I wonder if an even better new Japanese BD could be coming soon. Though it's possible a new JP disc again won't include the English dub, which the review praises highly. When the dubbing is good, I prefer it with anime, so I can appreciate the visuals better.

Exact same transfer as the JP release, so they're identical with compression just a smidgen better on the new US/UK Blu.

Thanks Powdered Toast Man! Did you get the release and find it to look any better in motion on your set? Sounds like I will pick this up. Also, I think the JP BD of the original version only had a dolby 2.0 track for English. From the review it sounds like the HD English dub is a whole new experience.

But yeah I own both now, just got the US copy a couple days ago. The newest US release is a mirror of the JP release but with better compression.

You (probably) think Eva's Platinum (Lol. In what sense) is identical to Japan's renewal don't you. A U.S. release fan boy.
