how do i make my brand new color tv black and white again? where in the manual does it say what knob to turn? i know the thing about color, but i prefer black and white

from color ntsc/pal 4:3 to hd, those black bars are so annoying! i prefer watching my SD channels stretched to fullscreen, i dont see what the big deal about hd is, the quality seems worse to me. if i sit far away it i cant see it as well so it must be better.
Haha ha a good one!
But I can understand his point, even if I do not agree with manipulating the picture.

Too bad they don't have fullscreen versions on Blu-ray, like they did with DVD.

. But more seriously, I put the not that far off actual reactions down to adversing choosing to market features like widescreen as being inherently better to make it simpler for them and this ending up confusing the public when an improvement that helps helps in some cases contradicts what previous ad buzz seemed to advocate (and which for this reason they don't advertise). Though with the cel shadow in animation and general "seams" of filmmaking that HD reveals it's also half to do with too many people not having seen something that old in a cinema recently enough to recall that that's what it actually looks like.

I agree with Beta and everyone else who has suggested that 2.35:1 and 2.40:1 aspect ratio films should be watched with the letterboxing, not stretching it to fill the screen -- I know it's annoying at times, but it is what the filmmakers intended. Further, eventually you get used to the black areas.

That said, I do understand the OP's desire to fill a screen with image -- I watch 4:3 material ONLY in a full mode, whereby my player expands the image to fill my widescreen set with full screen material instead of having the "pillarboxing" around the 4:3 image, which to me is ridiculous even if it keeps the image in its correct delivery. I'm talking full screen DVD transfers here; I keep my Oppo Blu-ray player's aspect ratio setting on "16:9 Wide" which allows widescreen material to play back as intended, but also automatically stretches full screen material to fit the screen.

But here's the thing...I know that with true 1080p Blu-ray material, there isn't a way to "blow up" the image because it is kind of "locked in" on the discs -- for example, I watched Casablanca one time on Blu-ray, and it was framed in a 4:3 configuration. I could NOT stretch this image either on my Blu-ray player or TV, and I later found out that with 1080p encoded material, the image -- whether full or wide screen -- can't be stretched unless manipulation in the player is done (i.e. playing with the output resolution controls, which becomes a pain)...

So, I don't think there is a way to physically stretch even wide screen films to fit a screen when it's 1080p high definition material...

If I am wrong, please let me know.

Sweet fancy Moses. I don't know where to begin. But let's just start with the concept that stretching an image to make people and objects look bloated is never a good thing.

I found a DIY solution to the black bars......

This was $1.49 I got the "Silver" as it matched my T.V. bezel, but also available in black....

Then, 7 hours to carefully apply, and VOILA! Black Bars gone!

Application time may vary due to screen size, and aspect ratio.....

LOL the crazy part is I bet Beta's not the first one to apply duct tape to his expensive HD TV just to get rid of wide screen picture.

If you watch your movies in a very dark room you won't see the bars.

I'm not dissing anyone, but I found that once I get into a movie I do not, nor ever, have noticed the black bars. I only concentrate on the actual picture on the screen.

That statement you quoted was taken completely out of context -- I wasn't referring to "letting me know I was wrong" as it relates to the FULL SCREEN material. I realize that stretching 4:3 material makes the images appear a BIT "bloated" but I don't really notice this on my screen -- furthermore, I MUCH prefer this method for full screen playback rather than seeing the awful pillarboxing around the 4X3 image.

HOWEVER -- I DO NOT condone or suggest this for true WIDESCREEN material; these images shouldn't be blown up or zoomed, unless it's a non-anamorphic transfer that needs some zooming assistance due to its lack of widescreen enhancement.

I hope that cleared up my position.
