Not a Jim Carrey fan but I have to say this is his best subtle performance. I have to say that the reason I have watched this movie is because it is directed by Frank Darabont who seems to get the best performances out of his cast. I have watched other his work like The Shawsahnk Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist. And Liked all the three. So watched this few years back and I have its DVD. I was not disappointed at all. No matter what his movies talk about, he always makes sure to include the deep human emotions into them, and some of his actors made their best work with him:
- Morgan Freeman : The Shawshank Redemption - Michael Clark Duncan: The Green Mile - Sam Rockwell: The Green Mile - Michael Jeter: The Green Mile - Doug Hutchison: The Green Mile - Marcia Gay Harden: The Mist And to this list I would include both Jim Carrey and Lourie Holden who both gave very touching and warm performances in The Majestic The Majestic is a highly recommended movie and a must watch to whoever thinks Jim Carrey cannot act beyond making funny faces. This film truly deserves a blu ray release Last edited by halimali; 06-26-2013 at 02:35 PM. |

The Majestic had been on my watchlist for awhile and I finally saw it tonight. It has immediately become one of my favorite movies. And I am NOT a Jim Carrey fan at all. To me, this is his performance -- even topping The Truman Show and The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
It has so many wonderful elements -- it's about the movie business, there are several stories within the story, it captures the time (1950s) and mood wonderfully, and it has a happy ending (that's a joke in the movie.) The movie is beautifully shot (I saw the HD version on HBO) and deserves a great BD transfer. So here's another vote for a BD and a recommendation to watch this is you haven't. The Majestic is a superb film, and very underrated - I know very few people who have seen this. I think that when it was released in 2001, it went under most people's radar since it was a non-comedy Jim Carrey film.
Along with being a very entertaining film w/a great story, I liked how the Hollywood blacklisting that occurred in the 1950's played such an important part of the narrative....This film, along with The Front (starring Woody Allen) are two great movies about this subject.... This has always been my favorite Jim Carrey film (and I really enjoy a lot of his movies). It's a beautiful film, directed in the vein of "It's A Wonderful Life". I absolutely cannot understand two things: 1) How this film didn't kill it at the box office upon release, and 2) how Jim Carey was not nominated for an acedemy award.
I really hope this gets the bluray treatment soon. |

I was just doing my quarterly "Gee, I wonder if these movies are on BD yet..." check and ran across this thread.
According to Amazon, The Majestic will finally see a BD release on February 24, 2015. Pre-ordering available. Hurray! https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-M...Blu-ray/43523/ |

I love this film. It fallsinto a weird category of film to me accompanied only with Orange County.
Probably over a span of about 6 years, I would catch The Majestic (and similarly Orange County) on TV at various different points during the runtime, but never finished it! It was weird because I wanted to finish it, but there was something about not seeing the end that kept it fresh and a desirable film for me. In fact, a couple of times I would turn it off after watching a bit more than I had previously just so I could keep it going. Eventually I rented it on Netflix years ago and turns out that over the years, I saw the whole film except forthe last 5 minutes. Alas, I have not watched it since. Perhaps I was subconciously holding out for the blu ray. Great movie and great performance from Jim Carrey. Wish he would do/get more dramatic roles. I feel like hes been largely praised for his more dramatic performances (Majestic, Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine, Man on the Moon). Speaking of Man on the Moon, holy sh*t do I need this on blu. One of my favorite movies of all time |
