if the image is 1:78:1 then the image is cropped if there are black bars then the image is original ratio
The ratio was 1:78:1

Why would you need dubs and not subtitles?
I'm also curious about the live-action films since i'm interested in those also. Never seen them, the live-action, and it's been years since I've seen the animated ones.

Well is there a place I could import them with original audio and English subtitles? The live-action ones.

I will check my Blu-ray of Asterix And The Olympic Games (Canada release) later if you wish. I never bother checking sub titles or dubs for these, there is no need since I speak French I can check what that release came with. I believe the first two are coming on Blu-ray (in Canada) this year also. They might be out in France already but I don't think you would have English sub or dubs on them.

Wow! Great to see these movies on blu-ray.

I use to watch these movies as a kid on Tele Quebec during the holidays (called Ciné Cadeaux). The fun thing is, now that I have kids, the tradition continues every holiday season and they love these movies.

But, you could tell the TV station is using old reels and the quality is deteriorating.

I wish I would know the quality before I commit to this price.

Just an FYI. Asterix: Le coffret 3 movie - BD is also available at HMV and cheaper than Archambeault at $37.99.

http://www.hmv.ca/Content/Products/G...ame=Group.aspx

It's also posted on Amazon.ca but from a seller only. Weird.
I wish the first 2 live action movies were available on blu...

My gfs sister got her "Asterix et Cleopatre" and she wanted to see how it was in English, and in the scene
[Show spoiler]where the blizzard starts
, the audio distorts and makes a horrible noise. I don't know if it's my player or a defective disc, but -- just a heads up.

-the disc was bought in Montreal/St Jean - No idea which, likely St Jean however.

Edit: There also appears to be no chapters on it

That's a dealbreaker for me. The no English subtitles and not the region locking since the computer I'm building will be a multi-region Blu-ray disc burner drive. Been wanting to watch the live-action Asterix and Obelix films in production order in French/other production languages with English subtitles for quite some time. I don't mind importing but for a complete blind buy I'm wary.
But I'd love to buy a boxset for the animated Asterix and Obelix films on Blu-ray! Would it be released by Pathe! Distribution, GAUMONT (most likely) or another company? Doesn't matter as long as they're the original versions with original audio and English subtitles.

Oh I can't stand dubbing. Must be original intended language with English subtitles for me all the way. Even English is the only language I know and I'm glad I started using subtitles when I was way younger so I'm used to them now. Hopefully the Alliance release has English subtitles. Wish I knew French since I'm quite a Jean Reno and Luc Besson fan.
Slightly related but I'm heavily considering importing Les Visiteurs from Amazon France.

So yeah I think I might consider buying a boxset for the animated Asterix and Obelix titles on Blu-ray. That's if there'll ever be one.

@P@t_Mtl

i've just received the asterix boxset and the edit of the asterix et ceopatre movie is exacly the same as the DVD counterpart so the movie is censored missing bits of dialogue
wrong aspect ratio original ratio is 1:66:1 (specs on this site says 1:85:1 but internet movie datbase says 1:66:1 we allready had a fullscreen 1:33:1 edition in the past that at least was not cropped as much as this edition is so it's an edition to avoid at all cost

I recently ordered Canadian Blus of both Asterix The Gaul and Asterix & Cleopatra and BOTH had the issue you described above.

Audio on the English versions starts out fine but later distorts into a loud screechy noise. It starts about midway or so through Asterix the Gaul and near the beginning of Asterix & Cleopatra, and lasts the duration of each movie. French versions seem to be unaffected (I don't speak French so that doesn't help me).

I'm viewing these on a PS3. Does anyone have more info on this problem? Google search doesn't turn up much.

I received Asterix The Gaul (Canadian version) last week so I decided to try out the disc just right now after reading these comments. The same issues occur on my copy. Starting from halfway the movie, the English audio track becomes inaudible & it's all screechy metal sounds.

Is there any other bluray version available worldwide with English audio?

From this limited sampling (4 for 4) it seems there is a very common or possibly global issue with these discs.

Kev, are you also using a PS3, or a standalone player? Not that it should matter, but I'm curious.

Can anyone attest that they've gotten the English versions (Canadian release) to work without any audio problems? All feedback appreciated.

I used my Philips HTS 5.1 plus I also played it on my laptop (which has quite a recent blu-ray drive). Same issue with both players... I'm starting to think all the Canadian prints of Asterix The Gaul will have this English audio issue.

Starting to look that way. I likewise tried my PC Blu drive and still had the same audio issues, confirming it's the disc and not my equipment.

When is the live-action Mission Cleopatra film going to get put on Blu-ray? I hope it gets released in Canada, so that there will be English subs and/or dub.

Sad that the discs weren't properly authored. The English audience for these movies is probably pretty niche so getting a fix may be a long shot.
