White Heat
Oh yeah, and Ladykillers reminds me of Lavender Hill Mob! Nice to add a little levity to the list. Another (sometimes) funny heist flick is Bill Murray's Quick Change.

And Asphalt Jungle is a great pick. Haven't seen Criss Cross, though I have the DVD. Will have to check it out.

Enjoying the lists - thanks OP!

The Town
Inception
Italian Job
Ocean's 11 (remake, have not seen the original)
Inside Man

H.M. to Takers - terrible acting but a fairly entertaining movie with some sweet heist scenes

I don't usually get into 'ABC is not XYZ' (in fact, those posts usually annoy me) but I'm curious about your thinking here - Casino?

Wow a list of yours I pretty much like the whole thing ( did not see Set It Off). But Casino is kind of an odd choice isn't it?

there are some films that I love here but I don't think of them as "heist" movies-- Die Hard, Goldfinger (yes, it does have a heist at the end but still...)

I would say that the best ones are

HEAT

THIEF

and really that's about it for me as I'm not really a fan of the genre

The only reason I put Die Hard on mine is because it does not just have a heist somewhere in it. The entire movie revolves around the heist at Nakatomi. I guess if it followed the bad guys and not John then it may fit the bill a bit more.

I hear what you're saying, as I said the movies in question to me certaintly have heist elements but to me "heist" movies are usually about a bunch of guys that get together that rob a bank or break into a top security building and steal data, etc etc.. and that's why I don't usually care for them-- they tend to take half the movie with endless scenes of prep work which bore me to tears and destroy any repeat value--

Die Hard and Goldfinger never bored me for a second as they both are in my favorite 100 movies of all time!

Yea I tried to sneak that one in. In fact when I looked up Heist films there were a lot of films listed that were very questionable like Money Train, The Big Hit, Harlem Nights etc....I did update my list to a film that has one of the greatest heist scenes of all time. Got Em!!

I struggled with the same question regarding The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, which is why I left it off my list, but reconsidering it now I say it counts. I love the original! I also love Dog Day Afternoon, but I didn't think of it as a heist film.

The blue print for the heist film to me is The Asphalt Jungle, where we see the planning, execution and aftermath of the heist in question. (Rafifi and The Killing follow this same structure.) Usually the heist itself is filled with tension, as the criminals work without arousing notice. Reservoir Dogs plays with this formula by never showing the actual heist -- just the planning and aftermath.

Actually, it's not a heist.
[Show spoiler]Goldfinger's real plan was to blow up the gold.

Anyway, here's my list:
Bonnie and Clyde
The Ladykillers ('55)
The Getaway ('72)
The Bank Job
The Italian Job ('69)

I'm not doing Die Hard because, technically it's not a heist movie even though it revolves around one. And I won't do Inception because it's more about "planting" an idea, not stealing one.

OMG, I forgot about Dog Day Afternoon. That film actually hits a little closer to home because my Step-Mother dated the real-life Sal's Father.

Here's one nobody's mentioned, that I absolutely love... A Fish Called Wanda.
