I agree, even though I've never seen Gone Baby Gone, I've heard good things. Plus, The Town is one of my favorite films.

Gone Baby Gone is good, but a lot of peoples beef with it is the ending. You either love or hate the outcome.

I've seen Gone Baby Gone and The Town. Both are very good films. Ben Affleck is think is like Clint Eastwood, better director than actor and definitely like them both as artists.

Remember back when Affleck was making one turkey after another and Damon was doing all the acclaimed work? Anyone feel like they switched places since Affleck became a director?

I too, am very much looking forward to this. I loved The Town and blind bought Gone Baby Gone and enjoyed both a lot. I have a feeling this is going to be one of the most overlooked films this year for some reason. Affleck, as has been mentioned, is actually a very talented director. I hope he keeps up his current trend.

Thumbs up

I saw an advanced screening of this today, some spoiler free thoughts below. I'll put it in tags just in case you want to go in 100% fresh (something I recommend).

[Show spoiler]Affleck seems to have really settled into his grove as a director here. Argo is a seriously excellent film and one of the best of the year so far. Aside from the directing the performances of Affleck, Goodman and Cranston are all stellar as well. Tension is of the edge of your seat kind, the pacing is spot on and the atmosphere is believable and very tense.

There is also a fair bit of humor in here as well, something I was not expecting but it never plays itself as dumb or not needed. It felt very organic to the narrative.

I won't be reading your tagged thoughts, but I assume you like the film. How would you rank it in terms of his three directorial efforts?

I love both of his previous films, so that is fantastic news to me. With the talent involved, I never doubted this would be great, but now I'm even more excited. Thanks Snicket.

I'm sold, I wanna watch Argo now...The Town is easily one of my favorite movies, and have yet to see Gone Baby Gone, but I've heard some great things about it....I've always said with my wife to grab that movie, even as a rental, but never seem to get there....now with this, maybe I will and very soon too! But Argo is definitely on my top list of movies to watch!

Thats a pretty bold statement there, granted this is one film i definitely want to see just because of what it is about.

Affleck seems to only be good in 4 things, Kevin Smith movies, Movies he writes, movies he directs, and Dazed and Confused

Just saw Argo and damn... it was f*cking incredible. Best movie of the year? Could be. I love Moonrise Kingdom, so I'm gonna have to think about that for a while. Full review coming up.

My review (no spoilers):

Quote:

Argo (2012)
dir. Ben Affleck
The Good: Exceptional cast. Exceptional direction by Affleck (who's now a perfect 3-for-3). Great writing; a perfect balance of suspense, laughs, and drama. Yet another beautiful score by Desplat. Replicates the look and feel of late 70s/early 80s thrillers rather well. The climax is just sheer cinematic perfection (I must admit I got teary-eyed really bad). A genuine crowd-pleaser (the audience clapped eight times. Eight! And that's including twice during the end credits. I have never seen anything like that). "Argo f*ck yourself."

The Bad: A little contrived and Hollywoodish at times (which is typically a pet peeve of mine, but this is one of those rare instances where it didn't bother me because the film is just so darn well-made).

The Bottom Line: An unrelentingly intense and nerve-racking thriller, Argo is (and will remain), without a doubt in my mind, one of the best movies of the year. Highly recommended. Don't miss it.
