Studio Canal Collection?
Unlikely. Optimum (owned StudioCanal) are far too lazy to be bothered with special packaging and when they do have it it's very limited (through bad planning) as they are bad distributors and disc producers. Mean might be a good word to describe them. |

Mike thanks for the info on the short scene in the German trailer for Cross Of Iron. I've had a still of that scene for years, now I have seen the footage, amazing. Do you know if the scene was part of the Hospital recovery of Steiner? Or was it part of a scene from the book, where steiner get's leave?
Are you sure none of the deleted footage survives? The producers must have something in the vaults. I know that some deleted battle footage is in the dire sequel. Is it true the original cut of Cross Of Iron was four hours long? I was hoping Criterion would do Cross Of Iron one day, like they did with Straw Dogs. I can't wait for this to Blu Ray come out. Thanks for your hard work. Last edited by Jason Bagherian; 04-15-2011 at 02:16 AM. |

Hi Jason,
yes, that scene is taken place in the hospital. Senta Berger remembered it as a 'farewell scene', but the German trailer (and the acting) tells us it comes just before they end up in her room. Who knows where the shot footage is? I suppose everything was destroyed. That was the common practice for decades. Not even the LA studios stored all the shot film, usually only the negative of the final release version was kept. And sometimes even those are incomplete! (like EASY RIDER, where one reel was missing). Smetimes miracles happen as in the case of BLUES BROTHERS. I nearly fainted when I heard that the preview version survived and was released on DVD. Or the GOOD BAD & UGLY footage. But as for Peckinpah - I wish for miracles. I saw a rough cut/work print (in b&w) of the STRAW DOGS siege (twice as long, very interesting), there's the remainders on WILD BUNCH that were included in 2006. The Beta-tape of Sam's OSTERMAN cut, the sad case of PAT GARRETT and its various versions but besides that not much 'unseen' material exists I guess. That Hartwig used Sam's footage for BREAKTHROUGH is obvious - it was only one year later. But who would have kept 250.000 meter film (or whatever) Peckinpah shot in 1976? (YEES, we would - now.). Hartwig lives in Paris and when I talked to him briefly in 2004, he couldn't remember the whereabouts of 'outtakes' etc. And EMI left the picture business long time ago ... I only heard years ago that a 'gagreel' might have survived. Some funny outtakes incl. Sam adressing the 'audience' (= producer in the screening room) and saying: 'We want to thank our producer for the lousy food down here - it tastes like shit' (see picture below). (Sam then sent someone to Italy to buy a cow, he even barbecued himself for the crew) The 'original' cut is the release version. One of the few films that were released the way Sam wanted it (not in the US of course! I even have him on tape where he states that the 'German' version = UK version as far as I know - was his final cut.) Of course there was a longer version before that one, in the process of editing one starts with 4-8 hour long version and then comes down to a final version that 'works'. ![]() ![]() Last edited by mike siegel; 04-16-2011 at 01:01 PM. |

It seems the "Studio Canal Collection" is dead. Which doesn't bother me at all. They never were up to the quality Criterion standards they'd have you believe they were.

But for us Region B peeps without region free players it was as close as we could get to Criterion. I for one thinks its a shame they have stopped the studio canal digibooks.
