It's annoying that a lot of the smaller video stores in NYC all ordered Blue Crush 2 but not the first Blue Crush. I have no understanding of these people that order movies for their store. They assume that older movies do not interest people and they assume that everyone already owns the first Blue Crush on DVD so why buy the blu-ray version for the store? There is this mentality that the general public love brand new movies on blu-ray even if they are sucky direct-to-blu-ray/dvd sequels.

Got my copy today - hoping to check it out tonight. DTSHD5.1 should be good!
Looks like they dumped the special features and replaced it with BD-Live and Pocket Blu. Sadly, the most surprising thing about getting it today was opening to see it in a REAL blu-ray case. Can't remember the last one I bought that didn't come in an eco-case. |

Just finished watching this an am utterly disappointed in the picture. It was on the level of an upconverted dvd. No depth of field, few blurry scenes, edge enhancement, and nothing popped. This film has some incredible cinematography which should have lent itself to a great Blu-Ray picture. Alas, Universal dropped the ball on this one. The one saving grace for this Blu-Ray, which got rid of all the extras from the dvd for some reason, is the tremendous audio. The waves were loud and roaring. If only we could have gotten a decent picture.

I got my Blue Crush today. I think there was a quality control mistake with this blu-ray. The video is not good. The contrast is all out of wack, the skin is all pasty, and I think there may be serious edge enhancement going on here. I don't have the DVD to compare, but the video does not even seem like an upconverted DVD. It looks like a regular DVD. This movie isn't that old nor does it need some serious remastering, I just think someone messed up with the video. I don't remember the video quality looking this strange in the theaters as well as on the DVD. I hope Universal has a replacement program for this title, because it's one of those blu-rays that's supposed to look as good as Point Break and Into the Blue. Those expecting great definition and texture in Bosworth's butt shots are going to be highly disappointed. Very weird.

I just did a side-by-side with the DVD - the Blu-Ray looks slightly better (the biggest improvements to the video would be the additional clarity - license plates that are readable on the Blu-Ray are a blurry illegible mess on the DVD) and no macroblocking. Even the edge-enhancement seems much worse on the DVD (at least to me).
The picture definitely doesn't pop - it doesn't look great - and it was a little surprising to imagine that it could have gone to theaters looking like that. The audio is a definite upgrade on the release. You lose a good deal of extras (2 commentaries, music video, a number of featurettes/behind the scenes.. plus the ever popular Cast and Filmmaker bios!). Disappointing, but not completely unexpected for a catalog title. It definitely looks like they went through no effort in fixing up the video since the DVD release (June 2003) - it's basically the same master thrown onto a Blu-Ray instead of a DVD, the differences coming from what the blu-ray can handle that DVD couldn't. |

The Blu-ray should have been much better, especially with all the eye candy in the movie. The audio is good, but the video is a mistake. It really does look like an upconverted DVD. To add further insult, all the extras from the DVD have been dropped.
Universal really needs to reissue this title with a proper transfer. |

I think a lot of what saved the audio was that a DTS version was created for the (DVD) release, but dropped for a DD5.1 track at the last minute. Had they only mastered it for DD5.1 at the time (2003), I wonder if that would be as impressive on this release. |

So maybe if we ask Universal they might do that same. Agreed that they blotched this whole operation as I was looking forward to this blu for a while now. ![]() |
