I've always enjoyed the hell out of M:I-2. The third one is by far the weak link in the franchise, with J.J. Abrams shaky-cam all over the damn place.

The marketing for this was so ridiculous and pervasive. Not surprising that this was the highest-grossing movie; only other movie I can remember from summer 2000 is Gladiator, but that was rated R so it was never gonna do the kind of business that M:I-2 did.

And yeah, M:I-2 is a fun guilty pleasure. They basically took a discarded Bond script and shot it like a dumb, over-the-top 80s movie with Tom Cruise in it. Fun stuff if you're in the right mood. But M:I-III is my favorite.

I would say 75% of the threads here are irrelevant. A better question is why are you reading threads that don't interest you?

Some other big films that summer were The Perfect Storm and X-Men. MI2 actually was the biggest film domestically of that summer as well, The Grinch and Cast Away beat it in the holiday season, but didn’t have the same overseas appeal (Gladiator was also a movie that did very well overseas).

I have no issue with John Woo's direction. I mean, it's John Woo, so you know what you're going to get (or should). The problem with M:I2 is the sub-Schwarzenegger Action Movie for Dummies screenplay by, of all people, Robert Towne. If it took them more than a day and a half to write this thing then there must have been some seriously debilitating drug-use involved. Say what you like about the others in the series but at least they took the effort to include some cool twists and narrative curve-balls. Part 2 just goes to the stupid "miracle-masks" any time it needs to get out of a plot corner.

And don't even get me started on Tom Cruise's flowing pretty-boy/Dawson's Creek/Bachelorette-contestant douchebag underwear model hair.

It's an... interesting?... time capsule of where movies were at the turn of the century. Other than that...

The highest grossing movies are just the highest grossing movies, it's a number and something objective that has nothing to do with personal preference no matter the opinion.

If you ask me, the movie in question is awful, but then again, a lot of stuff that I think is crap makes a lot of money, so I have just become used to it being that way. On the other hand, I know that many people enjoy the fare that gross the big cash (especially on this board), which just shows furthermore that opinions are opinions.

Yep, the third one is by far the worst, with only Hoffman bringing the quality. Abrams always screws things up. He should stick to TV.

BTW, according to Box Office Mojo MI:2 was the third highest grossing film of 2000, behind The Grinch and Cast Away.

Great post and yes this absolutely sums up a lot of the big issues with this movie.

And that it is unexpectedly dull and uninteresting. The action really is the main standout.

This is ****ing amazing, lol:

Agreed. Despite all of the style, it's just overkill and story and romance is very dull.
