Didn't you read the above posts? Looks like Criterion will get their edition out sometime this year or next, this release is just for people who don't care about extras or quality and just want the movie. It's a filler for the wait.

Any Universal film that's featured in the collection is a possible candidate for a blu-ray release. I'm regretting my decision buying "Traffic" on blu-ray after Criterion announced "Fear and Loathing". I didn't think Criterion had a good enough standing with Universal to release films already available on blu-ray.

The Universal DVD was the director's cut, so there is nothing to worry about concerning which version it's going to be. The quality of the video and audio is another question. I guess we'll see if there's a huge difference between the Fear and Loathing Universal blu-ray versus the upcoming Criterion blu-ray. But then again, Fear and Loathing is a newer movie. Brazil may look pretty good from Universal since it's an older film.
I'm going to bet that the Brazil blu-ray will most likely get a blu-ray grade of 3.5 for the video and audio, but will still be better than the Criterion DVD. I think the more advertising ("Anniversary edition, Ultimate, etc.) they put on their old blu-rays, the better the quality. So if that's the Brazil final cover art, it's gonna be a 3.5 blu-ray. But hopefully, since LEGEND is getting "Ultimate Edition" with 2 different versions, I'm betting that LEGEND will get a blu-ray.com grade of 4 for video and 4.5 for audio! (I'm just being optimistic!) Universal has a good track record of releasing quality blu-rays of older films: Good: Back to the Future The Thing Darkman Psycho The Breakfast Club Flash Gordon Out of Africa Field of Dreams Spartacus Dune Wild At Heart An American Werewolf in London Do the Right Thing Questionable: The Last Starfighter Uncle Buck Fletch The Wiz Last edited by toddly6666; 03-30-2011 at 02:23 PM. |

"Wild At Heart" was done by Universal UK, and it may have looked ok, all the extras David Lynch produced with MGM were not ported over.
Spartacus and Do The Right Thing had color correction and DNR problems. The Last Starfighter to me looked pretty good, although it had that 80's color film stock problem. |

Universal can't really be defended by a reasonable person, they have released more abominations on Blu-ray than every other studio combined. They spend zero resources on restoring older films, dumping whatever master exists on the market unaltered.

Universal and Paramount are the two companies I second guess my blu-ray purchases. While Paramount releases catalog blu-rays with existing masters engulfed in DNR and EE, they also save themselves with gorgeous remasters of "The African Queen" or "The Ten Commandments". Universal just has a problem giving up these inferior film correction tools on almost every title excluding new releases. Some transfers are better than others, but they consistently show their technicians don't get it. "Psycho" is one of the better transfers yet it still retains a digital look. Let's not forget their cost cutting measures by using the same out dated masters. It bothers me a lot of my favorite films come from Universal and to say I'm not eagerly anticipating a blu-ray version of my favorite film, "Jaws", is saying a lot about their transfers. If Universal learned a few things from Criterion, like preserving the film-look when authoring a blu-ray, I'd buy more Universal blu-rays. Still, I'm glad they can still license their films to Criterion. Save a few films at least.

I'll wait for Criterion as well. I don't get these studios not cleaning up a film and doing a good remaster when the movie is going to be HD on blu-ray. Just doesn't make sense. They have the money spend it! Predator remaster looks just horrible. Glad I kept my original version on blu-ray with all the glorious grain!
