M. Night Shamalamadingdong "used" to be a Great & Prolific film-maker, but wow: what the hell happened to him over his last 3-4 films??!
![]() "Maybe" the script is really incredible & the team behind it (Studio, Producers, etc.) is enough for Will Smith [Show spoiler] to sign on. IF this turns out good, & M. Night better HOPE it does or he might be done for any somewhat "major" studio to take future chances with him, then maybe his career will Finally turnaround. A very good/"Original" script, a Known & Beloved "Worldwide" Movie STAR, & this could be something noteworthy.Only time will tell, but I'll take my chances with Will Smith in the lead of pretty much Any movie, no matter Whom the Director might be. ![]() |

And a co-producer credit/percentage, of course. It's more MNS that came to Smith for a job-- Between this and Airbender, he's trying to get away from his own scripts and sneak back into commerciality on other movies' marketability...I'd wish him luck and good therapy, if Airbender hadn't been so horribly wrong. (...May we assume I was not a "Hancock" fan? ![]() Stop it. Please. STOP IT. It became a "huhuh-huhuh" high school gag FOUR FILMS ago. Either force him to legally change his name, or get a new joke. Yes. We know. But it's since become just as annoying, repetitive and mindlessly one-dimensional. At this point, I'd freakin' watch Lady in the Water just to get away from it. ![]() Last edited by EricJ; 04-05-2011 at 03:58 AM. |

Did you see the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still? I find it disturbing that Will Smith would let his kids do any movies.

No way in hell he'd be in any movies if it weren't for how amazingly successful his dad is. |

I wish Smith would stop pushing his son as an actor. The kid can't act if his life depended on it. Time for the Smiths to get over it and move on. I'm seriously, how many more movies does that kid have to ruin before Hollywood wakes up?
As for M Night, I actually thought his Last Airbender wasn't so bad. Watched it the other day on Blu-ray and even though it's an incomplete story begging for a sequel, I actually found it pretty enjoyable. No, the biggest threat to this movie is Jayden, no doubt about it. |

6th Sense was great, and so was Unbreakable. Signs was very good, and so was "most" of the Village. I really loved Lady in the Water, and took it for what it was, a modern day fairy tale. Frankly, the only overall bad one I've seen from MNS is The Happening. Good premise, really bad execution and ending. Even the reviled Last Airbender was actually pretty faithful to its origin (yes I've seen the cartoon since, I thought it was much worse and just as juvenile as the film), given the time and budget constrain. Has there been a general downward trend, and does he take himself way too seriously? Definitely, yes. Is he the worst director of all times like some tend to make him? Not by a mile. Looking forward to hear more about this project, the only thing that worries me is a probable Jaden Smith vehicle carried by Dad. Thought he was just ok in Karate Kid, and awkward in Pursuit. We shall see. |

![]() (Call that a "yes". And the ad would be a brilliant parody of stylistic excesses if it wasn't trying so hard to smooch up.) Quote:
Thing is, seems more like MNS finally realizes his name alone is box-office poison, and he's trying to "revinvent" himself by latching onto other more sellable and mainstream elements. Which, for comparison, reminded me of the time Mel Brooks was running out of steam and tried staying "current" by putting Leslie Nielsen in his comedies--It wasn't Brooks and it wasn't Zucker, it was just....something. ![]() |

I still have some hope for Shyamalan. He's too good to keep slumping forever.
His first three films (Wide Awake, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) were excellent. The first 3/4 of Signs was also great, but the final act was disappointing and too convenient for me. The Village was a good Twilight Zone homage. It would've worked better as part of an anthology, imo. The Lady in the Water, The Happening, and The Last Airbender all had great concepts but bad execution. So far, his record in my book is 3-2-3. That's still pretty good, but I'd like to see him go back to being more focused like in his first three. |

Main problem: I have enjoyed exactly ONE of M Night's movies: Unbreakable. Did not like the other 3 or 4 I saw. Think he's highly overrated.
Second problem: very tired of Will Smith pimping his kids out to every project that comes along (see also: Willow Smith/ Jay Z "Annie" remake). Just because you are an actor doesn't mean your kids are too. |

Signs is very good.
![]() The Village is pretty good for most of it. Unbreakable start off good then quickly turned to crap The Happening is crap all the way through Lady in the Water Crap It is clear he can direct and has talent in that aspect with regards to cinematography . Writing on the other hand should be for somebody else. |
