No. There are worse when it comes to Japanese BD releases.

Thanks for the write-up. Can't wait for my copy to arrive (probably early next week). Not too bothered by the overscan (well maybe a little on the plasma, but the with projector I can expand it out) - though like you said there is really no need for overscan. Maybe the Manga releases won't have overscan...

Anyways, can't wait to see it on the HT system!

And US releases too: Jin-Roh and Yukikaze come to mind...if you can find them.

Yeah I have LCD and it can do overscan as well so it's not a big problem but it's always best to utilize 1920x1080 resolution fully. If Manga release doesn't have overscan, I would be a little sad but it's better to have higher bitrate in REDLINE's case, I would think.

Finished watching it, was pretty disappointed as initially I was very hyped about it Instead I felt there was too much comic styling with bold colours that distracted me from the subtitles. I'm used to subs & normally prefer the original audio yet this really requires a dub imo, will have to watch it again once it happens

I also found the characters & story pretty bland too, even in terms of action it never got my heart racing. Its a shame because there's lots of effort put into this but I couldn't get used to it

Do you like Speed Racer?

I did, except for the crappy stuff inbetween the racing

It was mainly the animation in Redline that I found so distracting from being so bold whereas Speed Racer was colourful yet seamless

I watched the movie last night and I was also disappointed, especially since it was such an expensive disc. I went into it expecting some insane action, but the action kept being interrupted by boring dialogue scenes that killed the momentum. I was surprised by how talky the movie was. The animation was great during the races, but the story (which was very simple but presented in a convoluted way) and the characters weren't compelling. I felt that it was more of a showcase for animation technique than a movie.

It's too bad, because until I finally got to see it, all I saw was overwhelming praise for this movie. I wonder if anime fans in the West were just desperate to see something again that appealed to them instead of the moe and panty obsessed Japanese otaku.

I'm hoping all these mixed reviews will be similar to those of Sucker Punch...and I will end up enjoying it just as well. Only thing with Sucker Punch though is I was very unsure going in to it; with Redline I'm 100% enthusiastic going in (well maybe not 100% now - but still very much looking forward to it.) I will say I love Trava Fist Planet though, and from other forums Redline retains some of the Trava influence...just more refined and a little toned down.

Oh well, I'll find out whenever it gets here...

I thought this movie was going to be decent going in, but I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I enjoyed the music, the characters and the atmosphere. The story is good, but
[Show spoiler]there are a lot of weird loose ends. However, I wasn't too bothered by them not being properly dealt with.

The PQ and AQ on the disc is near flawless (minus the overscan). The subtitles are pretty good for the most part, but there are a few things wrong here or there (grammatically and as muhoot pointed out, some things translated differently from what was being said).

I watched the beginning and then fell asleep. I'll give it another try sometime. I feel bad for the folk that spent 100 bucks on this.

The problem is that it was grossly overhyped on the Internet (by Twitch and a few others). It was also hard to see until now (unless you went to film festivals) and it had a terrific trailer that got people excited. People also heard things like how it took 6 years to complete.

In reality, it's not a bad film, but I don't think it's going to win over anybody who doesn't already like anime.

Yeah, I never heard about it until the blu-ray was announced. I watched the trailer and thought it looked pretty awesome. I guess anyone waiting for a movie for like 6 or 7 years would be pretty disappointed with the end result lol

Ok, watched this and all I can say is wow. I was blown away by this film. The animation is something else. Those looking for anything more then pure entertainment from this film are probably missing the point of it. It is one heck of a ride. The racing sequences are jaw-dropping. They may not have the coherency of Speed Racer, but I really don't think the makers of this film were interested in letting the audience understand where racers are in relation to others and the rest of the course. Just give into the animation and the pure spectacle of what is onscreen and you won't regret it.

It seems a lot of people were disappointed with this but I thought it was such a fun ride of a film that I will be revisiting it in a couple days.

I received in my copy today and did a preliminary viewing for this weekend (watched it on the small screen [43" Samsung Plasma])... basically second what you say stobbart.

This has dethroned Evangelion 2.22 as the best overall Anime Blu-Ray experience. The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track has so much depth with the directional panning so smooth and precise it's sublime. All the little sound details, like when a car shuts off and the fluids are draining back down into the pans and the thermal differential cooling of the drivetrain and powerplant components really make the audio track something special. The dialog is just a little too softly mixed in some scenes, but that's the ONLY flaw with the audio track.

The visuals...Ohh MY! The pure density of detail and fluidity of motion was everything I had hoped for and more! Story was fine - it did everything it needed to do, and did it well actually. As was mentioned in the extra's DVD, the story was originally very detailed for all the characters with backstories and such [like Star Wars] when beginning the project but they cut back the scope to just JP and Shonoshee essentially and went for a fun ride of a movie... that was the right choice IMO. The extra's DVD makes everything clear about the intent of Redline and why it was made.

Now that I have a the level for the audio setting confirmed (same level as most of my favorite Blu-Ray movies actually, -15dB), I can't wait to watch it again Saturday evening in full HT experience mode...

Best import Blu-Ray purchase ever for me ended up being my first blind buy, Redline! Now that I've finally seen it, I'm not sure how I feel about the Manga dub copy...that better be the best dub they have ever done otherwise it's going to ruin the movie.

I hope they don't lose the feel of the movie or misinterpret the dialogues. Like how JP sarcastically repeats Frisbee in the hospital (I think subtitles should have quoted JP's dialogue to emphasize that). I think a lot of the humor in REDLINE depends on the tone in voices so hopefully it will be retained.

I think the problem for those of us disliking the movie is that its very different from anything else to the point where "you either get it or you clearly don't". Its certainly not a movie for everyone especially when coming from an expensive blind buy

I'm on the fence but I think I'm going to bite on this one. It's been a while since I've ordered a Anime BR disc...
