Like said earlier, 1080p cameras were used to film aerial shots and those indeed are visually the best part of this series. Absolutely stunning.

And yes, UK SE is in 1080i 50
I don't get it. You admit that it has more than a few problems in the PQ department, yet you would rate at least 4?????

Isn't 4 very good???

I think 3 or 3,5- would be really fair, but I felt the need to compensate.

Home I gave 4,5

PQ:

+ Contrast and black levels are usually terrific.
Colors are extremely lush and eye-popping
detail is good/great/excellent
Many shots are drop dead gorgeous

- some noise in darker patched (digital cameras were used, and not the best ones, but much better than Plane Earth)
colors are a little over saturated in some shots.
aliasing is rather frequent
purple fringing is an obvious problem in some shots
lens distortion is a pretty frequent issue

All in all, due to the stunning photography, I can't give it a mere 4 for PQ. It's just so much better than PE, and only pales in comparison to Baraka, whose detail is unrivaled.

You're reviewing the US PE, not UK SE. It's not perfect but at the end, good overcomes the bad. And yes, 4 is good and SE is visually good.

edit. 4.5 would be very good and 5 is excellent so I don't see any issue with saying that.

I do not own Planet Earth so I may pick this up depending on the price. If its to expensive I will just get the original release of Planet Earth

I'm fine with my current copy. Unless this is super spectacular, I'll be passing.

Compression is generally a bit better but seriously, I think there really isn't that much of a difference.

Sometimes there's bit less banding (SE on the right):

Or it's a bit sharper with better defined noise/grain:

Or it has a bit less macroblocking:

But most of the time it looks pretty darn similar:

All of the source issues with the digital noise, macroblocking and upscaling artifacts are still there, and I noticed a couple of scenes (the ones with huge flocks of birds) actually had worse compression artifacts on the SE.

3.5=7 ie... Decent/good

4=very good/great

4.5=amazing,excellent,fantastic, etc...

5=essentially flawless, masterpiece

Picture not telling much, but real video showing the big different.

I can't stand on original release which is too much banding, crazy edge issue and etc.

I rate PQ of Special Edition (UK release) - 4 star, but I can only give PQ out of 2.5 star for Standard Edition (UK release also)

That actually sounds somewhat tempting... but I'm still going to hold out if the picture quality isn't improved any.

Does the UK special edition plays on US players (ps3)? I already have the regular edition from UK and that plays fine but would like to pick the special edition.

This has been said numerous times on numerous threads and reviews for the SE, but you may not have seen so:

In short: no.

It will not play on a US PS3 because it is in 1080i50 which is a frame rate in line with European broadcast standards and isn't recognised by US PS3s. The original UK release was in 1080p24 like almost all other BDs (well, BDs of films anyway) and region free so that's why it worked. I'd wait for this upcoming US release or get a different US player that can handle 1080i50 content (or PAL content, if it can handle PAL it likely can handle 1080i50).

Im content with the BBC version that I have. I cant see any reason to double-dip on this. There are some dodgy shots but there are plenty of good ones too. The important thing is having Attenborough's commentary and not having to listen to Oprah.....BARF!

Wasn't it Sigourney Weaver? I believe Oprah did the narration for Life!

Does anyone have any additional information on this release in terms of specs?

Will the audio be lossless/improved? Higher video bitrates? Any improvement over the original?

Thanks!
