How about a new trilogy, not of the events taking place after Episode VI, but of the events which make up the video game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. They even have the actor from Battlestar Galactica who was used for the video game...I'd love to see that!

Wink ill treasure my pal dvd's,the unaltered original trilogy

for all those people out there not interested in the (not compleet!)blu ray versions, grab the pal dvd's now while you can cause they are the ONLY way to watch the trilogy unlatered in their best condition brought out, before they disappear alltogheter out of circulation!
you get extra resolution over the ntsc versions, its not like it ever will come even close to the blu's that are about to be released but you get to see them as they were made!
if you have the latest Oppo player, let it do the scaling to 1080P,its simply amazing due to its state of the art video processor, but it will be verry watchable on anny "decent" player with some good scaling tbh.
shame i cant buy the blu's but i just cant have it "he" changed so much in the originals and now not releasing them on the best possible format is sheer stupidity and lack of respect towards his fans.....

Without debating you. I just want to say that I disagree with you wholeheartedly. Lucas respects his fans...I've met him at celebration V and at the closing of star tours and he respects everything we have to say about him.

Unhappy no respect i'm afraid tbh...

believe my i do not like saying that,i saw all the originals at the time they were released and "in person" mr Lucas on a convention, sure i agree he is nice but that doesn't mean he respects us fans..
if he would then there would be no argument here,do like other directors and release the originals alongside the altered versions, why in heavens name upset so manny fans?
and let's not forget, for the "conitu..."of the story he actually removed the original actor appearing at the end...how would you feel when you were that actor?
annyways..that's how i see the whole thing and i'm absolutely not alone out there proof the outcry of fans worldwide after the details of this set appeared!
however i do wish all the fans that order the set a great time with it,it was a long wait for them,so enjoy the ride, cheers.

Lucas respects the fans dude. His love of his fans and the respect for them is what got us the special editions in the first place. The fans wanted to see the Jabba scene for years, Lucas gave it to us. We wanted to see the films ONE MORE TIME in the theaters, he did that for us too (adding in some special effects to make it more to his satisfaction at the time and to avoid younger audiences calling the effects 'cheesey'). We wanted more Star Wars, he gave us three more films and a tv show. We want Star Wars to be a big deal, and he is making the blu rays a 'big deal.'

Listen, I question a lot of the changes in the films too, but we asked for it. He may be a very rich man, but he probably doesn't have the resources of a major studio to do a blu ray set like Blade Runner, LORT Extended Editions, Avatar Extended Edition and the Alien box set. These things cost a lot of money and I would LOVE to see the UOT show up on blu ray (and I def think it eventually will as its shown up in every other format since fn BETA). But right now, this is the best we are going to get.

I do question the quality of the UOT release on DVD (have said as much in the past) but I also can see it from another persepective. That set was released late in the DVD life cycle and there is a chance he thought that interest in such a thing would be small (who didn't already own Star Wars? Would people honestly double dip? Should he convert films to a anamorphic format if the sales weren't going to justify the cost?). At the time he was already considering 3D releases of the films and was probably already thinking about the eventual HD releases. So, maybe it didn't get a full effort then because he had other designs. I'd give the dude the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, he does respect the fans and I think that much is obvious. He's just not perfect is all.

No, he's not. I he would've respect the fans, he would give us restored and remastered original, theatrical versions in 1080p (+ special editions), with stunning set of extras worth waiting for. None of the above is in the Blu-ray edition.

That's sooo sweet and touching, really, but the real reason is more simple: $.

Are you talking about this awful CGI crap that doesn't look like Jabba at all? And about that ridiculous animation of Han Solo stepping on Jabba's tail? Oh yeah, I'm sure all the fans wanted to see something like this!

There were money for Special Editions, for 2004 DVDs, for UOT DVD's and for 3D conversion of The Phantom Menace (and maybe rest of the movies, I hope that's not gonna happen), but there's no money for definitive, first and at the same time last, COMPLETE edition of Star Wars? Only for, let's say, half of it?

There's no studio money (20th Century Fox, hello!) for full, already best selling edition of the biggest, most recognizable movie series of all time?

You gotta be kidding me.

Agree 100% percent. And people saying GL does not respect the fans is wrong he has done everything good for star wars sure he may make changes / edits to the films that we don't like but in the end he does respect the fans. And people saying the prequels are no good to me are'nt real star wars fans. I like all 6 films to me it's one complete saga.

So being a real fan means being completely blind? Than I'm sorry for all the "real" fans.

I did not mean all fans I mean fans who bash GL and the prequels.

Here we go again with this "real fan" crap. I grew up on star wars, and had the action figures, dvds, vhs, posters, magazines, and books. Pretty much anything with star wars on it. When I first saw the prequels in theaters I loved them. However, as I got older I realised the flaws in the prequels, and while I still watch them I will not say they are perfect or even that good of films. Star wars is a part of my childhood and I will always cherish it, but all of star wars has flaws. Just because I am mature and reasonable enough to recognize those flaws makes me no less a fan than anyone else. According to you though, I guess I was just a very good poser as a kid. Guess I better wake up from the delussion and throw all my star wars stuff away as I'm clearly not a fan, and my childhood is all one big lie.

Well, in my opinion, it seems that Lucas is simply doing what he's wanted to do from the start (make a grand, epic, fantastical "space opera"), and correcting the things he had to give up on in the '70s and '80s, due to a lack of time and money. One of the biggest reasons why the prequels are so much bigger and stylized is because Lucas could now afford, with today's technology, to make them that way. While the OT is clearly more industrial and gritty than the PT, Lucas has made no secret of the fact that he wanted much, much more for "New Hope", "Empire", and "Jedi". He seems to be doing what he personally believes is best to bring both halves of the saga closer together. He obviously knows he can't please everyone, but he's continuing his work anyway. Remember what he said in the "Empire of Dreams" documentary?

"I'm doing this for the love of "Star Wars". I like "Star Wars", and I think if I can get a room full of people, and they enjoy it, then I've done what I've hoped to do."

Sounds pretty simple to me.

Folks, it is real simple. Lucas has control over the series and will tinker around with them until he is happy with them. If you don't like it, then don't buy the blurays. The original versions came out on both vhs and dvd (I know, I have them at home) so you can always sit back and watch the movies you remember. But to constantly sit there and whine "he owes us" is just plain stupid. Do you sit there going "I like the way the Ford half-tons looked in the 70's. Ford owes is to put out a retro line that looks just like them"? Unless you are planning to make Lucas one hell of a deal and buy the series from him, get over it already. Would I like to see the original version on bluray? Sure, but it isn't going to happen and I am not losing sleep over it. This thread is supposed to be about the bluray release: what is on it, etc. We don't need another thread whining about how Lucas is ruining the movies. Sorry if i pissed anyone off but enough already.

Well, what's an arena, if not just a huge room? My point is, from that quote, it seems like Lucas doesn't see the size of the audience as his first priority. He's telling a story, the way he wants it to be told, and in the end, he just wants folks to like it. All in all, that doesn't seem like an unreasonable expectation.
