Gotta admit it'd look kind of cool to have your HT screen behind curtains just like a real theater.

Really, I have heard people argue in favor of 4:3 projectors because they talk about how important regular TV is to them... That's backwards! Regular TV is one of the worst signal types you can have, make it the 'small' image, then go BIG for DVD and HDTV material!...
Couldn't have said it better myself

I am fortunate enough to be a Crestron programmer so when I built my house last year I got to incorporate a bunch of cool toys...

Several touchpanels, motorized shades, remote HVAC, fireplace controls... I have no 'dedicated' theater, so the plasma gets a 106" screen that drops down in front of it... 16 zones of audio... All with a touch or two of the remote (touchpanel) to make it happen. Motorized curtains are really cool and their masking product in combination with a universal remote can really make some cool stuff happen.

I don't consider THEIR prices outrageous the way so many manufacturers prices really are.

I just saw Revenge of the Sith in HD on HBO, and it looked amazing. I cannot wait to hear it in Dolby-HD.

Great post that I'd expand to include 4:3 in general, not just confined to front projectors, although that certainly would be the most absured and grandiose waste of money...to buy a 4:3 FP.

Default You've been seeing bars all along and didn't know it

Next time you go to the theater, look at the screen before the movie starts. The screen size is usually not the same as that of the projected picture when the movie is shown. The black bars you see at home are actually the unused part of the screen that you didn't notice when you were in the theater. The workaround for this, at home, is to watch movies in a totally darkened room. If your picture is adjusted correctly, then you will no longer see the bars.

It's funnier if you read this with an Eric Cartman voice

Seriously, what's with folks being ignorant on OAR? Does he crap himself when 4x3 TV shows are pillarboxed on his 16x9 TV? Stuff like this is why HBO-HD runs the majority of their 2.35 films CROPPED to 1.78...and why I prefer SHO, they understand the early adopter HD folks understand and *want* OAR.

I dread the day when they start offering 2.35 BD films in "Full Frame" versions.
DVD originally had a "pan and scan" option built in, but no one used it!

Well too bad, you think every movie is going to be cropped just so it can FILL your 16x9 display? Many movies AREN'T filmed, nor displayed, in 16x9 ratio...

They should be in their original aspect ratio. I absolutely hate when they pan and scan, just to get it to fit a 4:3 ratio TV. The original letterbox version is always nicer and more enjoyable to watch.

With a name like "Vega" I presume he's a QT fan? SO I presume he loves watching a cropped version of Pulp Fiction (which was Panavision 2.39:1 ratio).

Puhleeze. The Black Bars on widescreen TV's are far less intrusive than they were on 4x3 sets... and far more enjoyable than seeing blown up, distorted, out of context images. If you're paying for HDTV, aren't you also paying to see the WHOLE image?

Of course, Vega's post could be taken as sarcastic... in which case, har har. But let's cut back on the personal attacks like that, even in jest, eh?

Hey, come on, this is an 8 months old thread.

Anyway, I'm sure if anyone likes their vertical height on the screen filled, they'll eventually buy a display with an electronic zoom (or a front projector with a zoom lens) to fill their screens.

Great idea, so then all movies shot in 2.39:1 format would lose about 25% off the sides of the picture to fit our 16x9 screens to make you happy.

Buy a projector if the Black Bars are a problem, you don't have to spend that much anymore, I bought a Optoma HD70 720P projector and a 52"x92 screen for $1200.00 total and I don't even notice any black bars.

Ever hear of ZOOM. If you don't like black bars oviosly your don't care for quality, use the zoom feature on your TV and the black bars are gone.

your missing the point
only 4x3 loses picture
I'm all for oar but there is no reason 16x9 should look like 4x3 sets

why do people complain about this. you are not missing any of the picture when there are bars, you are actually seeing the whole picture. that is the way the movie was filmed. well i guess you have two options. have the bars and see the whole picture, or hit zoom and lose some of the picture and quality. make your choice.

John, see these pictures and for further info go to this aspect ratio threads hub.

Original 2.39 wide image on theaters and on home theater front projectors with zoom:

25% of theatrical image lost if cropped to fit 16:9 display:

Full 2.39 wide image on 16:9 display:

True but i can see vick vega point
person pays thousands of dollars for widescreen tv,
and widescreen DVDS only to have it look like 4x3
when a person watches HD sports i doubt you get black bars

but like you say in dark room who notices
it's just annoying when movie looks like 2 inches in centre of screen

Default i'm so sick of 240:1 or 235:1

i'm so sick of popping in a 30 dollar dvd and seeing it presented in 240 or 235 with the top and bottom blacked out. i know people have been complaining about this for quite some time but i dont understand why every blu-ray disc and hd dvd can't be presented in the same form as crank or click or world trade center. either that or i wish that the hd dvds and the blu-ray discs would give us a choice to whether we want to buy a 200 ratio widescreen or a 100 ratio widescreen like how standard dvds give you the choice of whether you want widescreen or fullscreen. i dont know maybe i need to buy a bigger tv
