So depressing. I really wanted to see this movie do better...Hopefully word of mouth will keep this a float at the box office. It deserves the praise and recognition. If it doesn't, then I'm afraid we've lost all hope that filmmaking will ever be as great it was in 80's.

Dude - relax.

Remember, X-MEN: FC "just" opened last week, which will take $$$$$ from SUPER 8. Pirates 4, Hangover II, KFP 2, Bridesmaids, are ALL still doing pretty good numbers. IF it were to open in a Not so Crowded time
[Show spoiler](Like "X-MEN: FC", which picked a tough time to open as well)
, it'd probably be able to add $5-10M to the "projected" $30M wk-end GUESS-timate.

I know, but I feel like people just don't appreciate filmmaking like this anymore, you know? It's a trend over the last few years, and this seems to sort of solidify that. It's just a bummer. Remember, I'm an odd ball for my generation who loves movies from the 70's and 80's more than the 90's and 00's.

Lol - Oddball or not, what I said, is true. The marketplace in recent weeks is just too damn crowded it seems for 1 movie to open to Huge numbers (Hangover II aside, which is Still doing good business).

I'm sure it'll stay consistent, but how much so with what's opening over the next 3-5+ weeks, is hard to say.

same. i want Super 8 to do great. not for a sequel or anything, but just because it is such a great film it deserves it.

Exactly. And maybe if it does well, we'd might see an increase in more original movies like this...Wouldn't that be awesome?

Estimates for Super 8 getting revised uppwards again :

1. Super 8 (Bad Robot/Amblin/Paramount) NEW [3,379 Runs]
Friday $12.2M, Saturday $14M, Weekend $37M

It's encouraging to see an original summer movie overperforming at the North American box office, especially after Hollywood has spent the past month relentlessly beating up on not just the secretive marketing campaign but also what it's been deriding as a throwback to ET meets Close Encounters meets Jurassic Park. After making $12.2M on Friday, the movie did an even better $14M Saturday which should mean the weekend is around $37M. That puts Super 8 right in the range of the U.S. opening of District 9's opening of $37.3M, another well-pedigreed original movie deemed a success. "I bet no one outside of Paramount or the filmmakers thought that was possible," a studio exec emailed me...

2. X-Men: First Class (Fox) Week 2 [3,692 Runs]
Friday $8M, Saturday $10.2M, Weekend $24.7M (-55%), Cume $98.6M

Fox's week-old prequel X-Men: First Class is a strong #2.

3. The Hangover Part II (Warner Bros) Week 3 [3,644 Runs]
Friday $5.7M, Saturday $7.6M, Weekend $18M, Cume $216M

Never underestimate the film taste of the public for sequels because #3 Warner Bros' The Hangover Part 2 has now grossed over $200m in its first 16 days of release for bragging rights as the largest grossing film of 2011. It's heading to $250M domestic. "With Green Lantern, Horrible Bosses, and Harry Potter 7B lined up and ready to go, WB is positioned to regain the industry market share (4th year in a row) by the end of summer," a Warner Bros exec just emailed me.

4. Kung Fu Panda 2 (DWA/Paramount) Week 3 [3,929 Runs]
Friday $4.6M, Saturday $7.7M, Weekend $17.5M, Cume $128M

5. Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 (Disney) Week 4 [3,433 Runs]
Friday $3.1M, Saturday $4.7M, Weekend $11M, Cume $209M

Glad to see Super 8 overperforming, and glad to see X-Men holding strong for a second week. Hangover 2 on the other hand...ugh. Go away all ready. Kung Fu Panda 2 is a much better movie, I'm sad it's not doing as well as it should be.

Kung Fu Panda is a great movie. Industry thoughts are that playing in too many 3D venues has really hurt this movie. Ticket buyers are more cautious to spend extra $ on 3D movies at this point as the novelty effect has worn off. I'll spend the premium for IMAX 3D for HP and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and on Transformers Dark Side of the Moon. Otherwise, 2D for me.

Lol - this is now 2x you've called it "DARK SIDE OF THE MOON".

[Show spoiler]("Dark of the Moon")

Two times that you have noticed, I have been calling it by the wrong name for a while .

Anyways, back at the ranch, POTC: On Stranger Tides just reached $678M in foreign ticket sales which is just an obscene amount. Stranger Tides surpassed the foreign total of At World's End which is $646M. Worldwide On Stranger Tides is currently @ $887M with plenty of legs left, specially overseas where Depp and Cruz will be crowned box office champions for a fourth straight week.

I think the 3D fatigue is wearing as well. It's a big sign when something like Kung Fu Panda 2 is underperforming. I mean, the first is one of Dreamworks most popular movies and I know lots of people wanted to see the sequel. So it's just disheartening to see it barely over $100 million. I saw it in 2D because it was actually playing around me. The time for 3D has come and gone already it feels like. I wish Cameron wasn't pushing for it so badly. I wonder how well the Star Wars 3D re-releases will do...Well, it's Star Wars, I shouldn't have to ask.

Seriously. I wouldn't have. I'm surprised how well it's doing considering the reception has been lukewarm at best.
