Saying this season was "all a dream" would be even worse than anything that was "bad."

Technically no, since it would mean that Paul was dead, that the cancer wasn't in remission (turns out to be that way, anyway, so that wouldn't really matter) and that Adam wouldn't suddenly turn out to be a Christian, and a highly hypocritical at that. But if the writing continues to be the same way, then it wouldn't really matter what happened. Such a shame for a series that had such great writing.

This season was a bit of a drag and a chore to get through. I thought they went a bit extreme with the conventions and blog followers which I thought was in the realm of Weeds and totally did not work for this show. The Adam finding religion feels pretty standard and I thought Adam nailing the chick in the ass was all part of a joke on that story in general.

I give the show another season or two and hopefully they ground it a bit. I'd hate to think the show reached it's peak in the second season.

Maybe if she were in a coma or something like that, otherwise saying that none of that really happened would be stupid. Plus that's kinda taking the easy way out for their mistakes this season, rather than moving forward with what they've already done.

It's really not uncommon for kids (at least in shows) to all of a sudden get religious, or at least question it.

It all being a dream or her in a coma would be the most awful thing they could do. Many people, including me, would feel cheated. I would be annoyed I wasted my time on this season, and that they wasted mine. Yes this season was a letdown, but the show can certainly be salvaged.

Now I'm just nervous about it getting renewed. I feel like it probably won't since they're taking so long to announce a renewal, which would be disappointing.

At most it gets one more season. And I do feel a lot of this season felt a bit Weeds-esque, which really does not work for this series.

Well, I feel this season has already been wasted, and I do think they can salvage it (but that method is unpopular here ) but how would you suppose they do it? It does require all characters to go back to the way they acted before this mess.

Me too. Each week that passes after the series finale I think the chances of a fourth season become less and less, which is a shame as the series creator has mentioned that at the shows core she envisioned it as a 4-season show, one TV season per one climate season to track the year of Kathy's life.

Renewed for fourth and final season of 4 1-hour episodes; likely to air later this year!

Despite the really funky episode order (IMO this series should have been an hour long dramedy to begin with), I'm glad Showtime is giving the series a true ending despite season 3's lackluster ratings!

Showtime Renews The Big C For Extremely Short Fourth and Final Season

Quote:
Showtime has renewed The Big C for a limited fourth and final season of four one-hour episodes, network president David Nevins confirmed Monday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in Beverly Hills.

Safe to assume the series will conclude with Laura Linney’s Cathy succumbing to her illness? ”I wouldn’t assume anything about how its going to end,” Nevins warned. “They have a very interesting, novel and form-breaking way to handle where the show is going.”

Whoa so that means the season premier is August 25th... Have they already started filming or something? I was expecting December.

Also, I don't know why but I'm finding a hard time using the word "season" with only 4 episodes (eventhough its the length of 8 normal episodes for this series); I almost want to call it a miniseries.

I guess so. Wouldn't miniseries only apply if it's one season like Mildred Pierce, Generation Kill, etc? It's technically 8 episodes so I'd say it's a season. At least they're allowing them to end the show instead of canceling it.

I mean, you could always watch half the episode then the other half the following week.

I think they must mean it will start airing airing the final season September 16th, but even that sounds unlikely. Filming is supposed to begin immediately though.

Anyway, I am so damn relieved this will get one final "season."

Just a heads up that tvline.com has edited there article and no longer reflects the September series finale date. Now the sentence reads something along the lines of TBD.

***CONTAINS FINALE SPOILERS***

While watching the first couple of seasons I thought if they ever got to this point in the show that it would be absolutely heartbreaking. But the final season wasn't nearly as effective as I expected. That's not to say it's bad, but I thought I'd cry way more than I did. The moment in Season 1 where Adam found the storage shed and when Lee died in Season 2, or even the scene in the first season where Cathy tells Sean she has cancer after they go visit their father but then takes it back, were all more upsetting to me than anything in Season 4. That's not to say that I'm not thankful that they had a chance to wrap it up and I am overall pleased with the final season. Adam graduating was lovely and I almost cried. Really nice moment. The final scene with Cathy and Andrea was also really nice. Now, the finale did get me when it actually happened. Paul bringing her the flowers and her being gone already was really sad.

Not to be greedy but I wish they could have done 5 episodes at least. It felt kind of rushed. But I won't complain. Would have been worse if it were axed after the third season. At least it was able to rebound after that. I was really disappointed Lee wasn't in the pool at the end. I would have thought we'd see him.
