Really need this on Blu-ray. Unfortunately, HBO has always waited until the next season is about to start before releasing the previous season on home video. I guess the idea is that after you watch the Season 1 Blu-ray, you will go subscribe to HBO because you need to see the next season.

I think it's funny that this show has coined a new term -- "sexposition". That is, using a sex scene to give exposition.

Yea HBO did a fantastic job adapting the books AND adding scenes that were not in the books at all.
What I am REALLY excited about is book 5, A Dance With Dragons, on July 12. Then I finally get to know what happens next.

Once I finish WoT: Towers of Midnight, I may have to pick up these books! They sound great! Am I looking too much into this series or does it sound a lot like England's War of the Roses: York/Lancaster = Stark/Lannister?

No that's not a stretch at all...I believe George RR Martin himself has admitted to using the War of the Roses as an influence in his novel many years ago.

Also, if you are going to start reading the books, I highly recommend you start from the very beginning instead of jumping straight to book 2. Even though you already know the main plot points after watching season 1, there's still A LOT of details and some wonderful characters missing. If you try to jump straight into A Clash of Kings(book 2) you could be somewhat confused.

Thank you so much for the info! Yes I would definitely start at book1...and I've always been a little confused about all things in life!

I know what you mean. HBO has done this with True Blood since Season 1 was released on Blu-ray. It's aggravating, just wish they would get Game of Thrones into stores a lot sooner than next Spring.

This has become an instant favorite of mine. I'm currently re-watching the entire season on demand. Day 1 purchase for me. \
C'mon Amazon get that pre-order up!

Thanks -- so if the do 1 book per season, we'll possibly get to a 6th season, before we wait... Don't see Martin picking up his pace any, maybe not the gap from A Feast for Crows to A Dance with Dragons... but still a bit of a gap :\

Woodsy, have you been reading the series since the beginning, or did you pick it up partially through? (I've been trying to find someone who started when only A Game of Thrones was published and the series was just going to be a trilogy -- haven't found one yet though).

I just watched the first season. Wow! It was pretty awesome. But it will seem like forever for them to get all the books done on TV.

I think the ideal series length nowadays is 5, maybe 6, seasons. At least for nighttime drama/fantasy/sci-fi.
A couple of great shows IMO:
Lost = 6 seasons
Rescue Me = 7 seasons
Mad Men = 5th upcoming, how many more?
Breaking Bad = 4th upcoming, maybe a 5th

I guess this seems to be the trend in nighttime TV land.

i have doubts that hbo will keep this show on long enough to finish the entire story.... there is going to be 7 books total, and who knows how long it will take Martin to release the final 2. Martin has even expressed hope that Storm of Swords be broken up into 2 seasons. Im about 550 pages in Clash of Kings and ive heard some fans of the series say they think finishing the series off after Storm of Swords could work... so if Martin got his wish and was able to get 2 seasons for that book that would mean 4 total seasons.

Is he (Martin) actually going to stop at 7, after the 6th will he feel he needs another book or 2?

In addition, are we going to see the extreme delay between A Dance with Dragons (finally!) and The Winds of Winter (or between Winds and A Dream of Spring).

May make more sense to break after the 3rd book and potentially look at starting the mini-series up after a few years (after the 6th book has been released). As if you started from Book 4 and did a season per, hopefully we'd have the A Dream of Spring published before they were ready to shoot that one.
