This will be fun cuz it has been years since I've seen it. I always wondered how Billy Crystal didn't get hurt being hit in the face with a cast iron skillet.

That was probably overdubbed in the original film to secure the PG-13 rating. Note that Crystal's character still uses it as an expletive ("F**k it!") in the beginning of the film, but calling that guy's book 100 Women I'd Like to F**k was probably pushing it even in 1987.

They've got scans up for the front covers of all of these releases for tomorrow. No indication of what the features are, but on the cover of "Throw Momma From The Train" they have a sticker on it that says "Includes NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN SPECIAL FEATURES". That gives me hope that at least these films (or at least this film) aren't getting released sans extras. And they're even got special features made specifically for this release. Another thing to think about. Just because Wal-Mart is selling these films for $10 doesn't mean that they are being released bare bones (as we were used to seeing with initial DVD releases of movies such as these). Judging from the majority of films that were Best Buy Exclusives and Target Exclusives (from MGM) those films were all being priced at $10 upon initial release and they all at least had the features from the various Special Editions DVDs from each of those previous releases. Also note that the regular price of these titles is actually $20 so we're getting them for 50% off to start. Not a bad deal.

I bought this and "When Harry Met Sally" but I'm not a good Video and Audio Reviewer. I can say I like it or I don't but can't pick out all the tech stuff that others can. Still, maybe tomorrow I'll post a review based on my amateur opinion.

As for the Blu-ray, I just sampled some of it and it's a major step up from the original DVD(the Contemporary Classics release from 10 years ago). I think there was another DVD release after that, so I have no idea how that one looked, but the Blu-ray blows away the initial DVD transfer. It's a 24 year-old low budget comedy, so don't expect much, but it was noticeably superior to A Fish Called Wanda which I also watched a bit of right before and that movie is about the same age. Yeah, I did notice a lot of that. That scene where he's talking to his agent played by Rob Reiner is especially bad. Watch at the very end of that scene and the beginning of the next scene where Billy Crystal's on the beach. Dirt and specs everywhere. This is clearly an older transfer and no restoration was done, but I still recommend it if you're a fan. Last edited by Adam_ME; 07-06-2011 at 05:11 AM. |

Agreed, easily worth $10. Quote:
I watched the entire film last night and while I cannot compare it to the previous DVD incarnations, I was pleasantly surprised. Granted, I set the bar pretty low and while things started out pretty rough, I think the transfer is a success given the film's age. Some night scenes exhibit less detail than their well-lit counterparts (from memory, the scene with BC on the beach and some shots of Danny DeVito outside at the phone booth and during the shots from further away), but these were few and far between. Regarding the indoor, daylight and/or well-lit night scenes, I found the detail to be quite good. Regarding the colors, the palette of this film is rather drab but when color is present in the frame (the scene with BC's agent played by Rob Reiner comes to mind), brighter colors tend to pop quite a bit (the flowers and RR's clothing in the aforementioned scene). There are some instances of dirt and specks here and there but to me they were not prevalent. The best thing I can say about this transfer is that to me, it was good enough to where I stopped worrying about issues and picking nits and simply had fun watching the film. I found myself thoroughly enjoying it and LOL'd on a few occasions. For fans of the film, this is easily worth $10. Last edited by RageATL; 07-07-2011 at 03:25 PM. |
