I just popped this in and gave it a quick run through. The Color is beautiful as is the overall picture quality. It's not often you see a film of this age look so good. They must have used a new HD master for this print.

As far as I can see, there's no dirt or scratches anywhere. Highly recommend.

Can you confirm what the aspect ratio is, and the run time please?

Run Time: 2 hrs 39 mins 29 secs.

As far as aspect ratio goes, is there a way to check that on my PS3? It certainly looks like 2.55 but I could be wrong.

Well even if it is, sadly, the general release print, and not the 100% aspect ratio it looking real good on blu is great. I will still keep my laserdisc box set though.

My favorite scene is with Jonathan Winters in the gas station. I never fail to laugh out loud at that. My order wil be here by Monday the latest from Walmart.com, but will wait to view as I will, in the very near future, be getting a bigger television set.

For those of you wondering what the back of the Blu-Ray case looks like I uploaded a large (3MB) JPG here. Doesn't have much info, but I thought I'd share.

I can't wait to go home and try this out!

The MgmHd transfer showed even more picture on the sides than the laserdisc, especially the right hand side.

Easy way to tell whether the bluray is 2.55:1 rather than 2.76:1 is during the "shares" sequence, everybody should totally be in the frame with additional information to the right showing the part of red vw beetle and left a shadow of the lorry on the floor.
If it crops either Edie Adam's back of arm or Buddy Hackett's back slightly then its 2.55:1.

A screenshot of the above can be found on the cinema history website where it compares the dvd to the MgmHd transfer.

Went to my local Wal-Mart today and OF COURSE they didn't have this (nor A Fish Called Wanda, which I also want) just like they never got The Big Country in stock. If the damn studios are going to make these movies store exclusives, at least make sure the damn stores have them in stock! Absolutely ridiculous!

I had the same problem. Didn't see any of these titles today.

I don't see any reason why this wasn't the proper 2.75:1. This was filmed in 65mm Ultra Panavision. Ultra Panavision took the 2.2:1 70mm aspect ratio and added a 1.25 anamorphic squeeze. Some prints may have been additionally optically corrected for projection on the deeply curved (usually 146 degrees) Cinerama screen.

There could be two reasons why it's not 2.75:1:
a) the studio decided that the height would be too short on HDTVs, so they cropped the sides
-or-
b) the 65mm negative or a 70mm print was NOT used for the transfer. Instead they used a 35mm 2.35 version and cropped the height to 2.55. That might also explain why it's not the full-length version.

If anyone has better insights, I'm open.

I saw this film in its original run at the Warner Cinerama in NYC. Even as a kid and in spite of the large well-known cast, I wasn't impressed. And I remember being disappointed that Jerry Lewis was only on the screen for a few seconds. To this day, I'll swear that it played in mono. It certainly didn't sound anything like "How The West Was Won", which along with "West Side Story" probably had the most spectacular sound of any film of that era.

My copy shipped earlier today. Looks like they are all out of stock online now. When it comes to Best Buy and Wal-Mart exclusives, I usually order online because it's always a crapshoot whether or not they will be in stock in the stores.

Glad I ordered Mad Mad World, Throw Momma and Harry/Sally online when I first saw the posting on this site.

I visited the Wal-mart in Piscataway NJ this afternoon. They seemed to have a shopping cart full of Blu-Rays and DVDs to stock. It wasn't clearly visible if there were any copies of Mad World there. However there were two copies on the shelf which I got for me and my Aunt.

I can't wait to see the disc after work. There is no booklet, just the cover/back and a disc, at least it's a 50GB disc (as you can see in the back cover I posted previously.) I'm curious about the aspect ratio too, it would be sad not to have this in it's true widescreen form. But for $10 it's hard to pass up for an HD version of this classic. I'll do a compare to my DVD and even LaserDisc copy tonight if I get the chance!

Note: the walmart did have A Fish Called Wanda and Throw Momma From The Train though. I'd call before going out to the store unless it's close by.

That is the answer. Studios are just not bothering to use large-format negatives, mostly due to restoration cost, for home video product unless the movie is a huge seller. This movie does not sell enough copies to justify that expense to penny-pinching studios.

I would agree normally but there is already a 2.76:1 transfer available, why not use it.

Going to my local Walmart later to see if they have this, I hope they aren't sold out of it!
