The film is not a horror film. A fantasy/character study film. Well made but not for those who like explosions and gore.
Rent before buying. fuad |

I liked this movie. better than village imo. my wife and i saw the village the day I proposed to her, almost brought the whole day down. especially when 30 minutes in i'm blowing the ''twist'' because it was pretty predictable.
but lady in the water was enjoyable. pq is not really impressive though. |

Can you consciously explain WHY "Happening" was "Worster" than Village's low-rent twist-ending-porn*, or Lady's rogue-elephant self-indulgence, -WITHOUT- using the following words: - Talk - Trees - Marky Mark - Village - Old lady Winner gets to keep his credibility. ![]() --- * - Remember when MNS was nearly sued for plagiarism over Village, after readers discovered "Unreasonable similarities" to Margaret Haddix's "Running Out of Time", and it was later decided he must have made it up himself because if he hadn't, he'd only gotten the first three chapters and hadn't ripped it off very well? ![]() She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag and her character serves no purpose to advance the plot or the lead's character. I dare you to watch the "climax scene" where they are talking through a pipe with a straight face. [Show spoiler] As far as the Village, the ending wasn't the best part of the movie. The acting was all grade A. There was the patented "suspense and tension building" throughout the entire movie that makes M Night movies so good, even if it did fall a bit flat at the end. At least I didn't literally laugh out loud at how bad the acting was in Lady in the Water. I saw it after I watched Paul Giamatti give an acting clinic in John Adams. Reminded me of Ben Kingsley in Species. Did I mention that this is the exciting climax (other than battling Senior citizens)? ![]() It stinks and I don't like it. If you like The Happening, have at it. It's literally so bad it's gone beyond so bad it's good (like Ed Wood) and is now back at so bad it's "worser". BTW - Rotten Tomatoes ratings. Sixth Sense = 86% Unbreakable = 68% Signs = 74% The Village = 43% Lady in the Water = 24% The Happening = 18% Last Air-Bender = 8% %= Percent of favorable reviews. I'll defend Happening by saying that if MNS's better films are one-trick-ponies (ie., slow creepy atmospheric treatment of some unbelievable plot twist for the CNN generation), I'd rather see that one trick than any of his thoroughly unprepared attempts to break out of it.
(Such as taking on anime-influenced Nickelodeon cartoons, for example, where slow, creepy atmosphere would be thoroughly out of place, or metaphysical ruminations where he's not even sure of his own point.) With MNS, you generally have to accept that he's more in love with plot construction and Inserted Character-Subplot MacGuffins than any actual depth to his characters--You're there for a plot, and if the plot can provide enough suspension of disbelief to explain why someone would "talk to trees" (it was just two lines, people, and more of a soliloqual aside, chill out!) or talk through pipes as an excuse to get out of Plot Difficulty B, just how much disbelief you suspend is your own cynical business. A good MNS can be realistic and dreamlike, and if the latter compliments the former, you suspend as much as in your own dreams. Again, like "Airbender", it seemed as if most of the audience came to "Happening" already bringing the rope, which made any complaints about the "silliness" of plot developments too difficult to distinguish from self-fulfilling prophecy...Had to throw out the case, for a biased jury. After the release of Split I decided to revisit some of Shyamalan's old movies such as this one. While I can appreciate the fairy tale elements of the movie, my biggest pet peeve was the self indulgence. You can tell that M. Night was really offended at the mixed reviews of The Village and gave those critics a not so subtle f you in the form of character Harry Farber. That and casting himself as a prophetic character who's writing will change the world. Give me a break, that was the sign of a massive ego.

Yeah, I sort of liked Lady in the Water, but I sold my BD a few years ago because it's such a low bitrate and lossy audio. If this ever gets a new master with lossless audio I might consider buying it again.

Its always interesting to read different views people have on movies you feel strongly about. Lady in the Water is one of my favs. I just can't tell you how much i enjoy watching this movie. I just loved the concept, the story and the score is just haunting. I love the message of the movie and the simplicity of all the characters. I rushed in here thinking we were getting a 4K release or something and when we do. It will be day 1. I'm still waiting for the village to come to BD. Shyamalan films are a love hate product. Some passionately hate his work.. others are obsessed. Which is always okay. Now i shall go listen to the score.
