It's too bad the live action movie was so mediocre. The CGI and sets were pretty good but the acting and casting choices were pretty bad for the most part (among other issues)
I'm not even going to give that movie a chance, to be honest.
What I've seen of it is so ridiculously bad and it was so predictable that it was going to be such a production...
I was already figuring on how to properly do a film-adaptation WHILE watching, quite early on while watching through it all.
I mean, this series is so well-made and therefor such great source-material, I totally felt the essence and I know I could do it.
As cocky as it may sound... But the movie that's out there, with apparently (what the heck) sequels coming... that's just not the way...
It already left fans unhappy, while it might have left kids happy. It's clearly that kind of "OK, let's make it live-action because we can." type of thing.

Is the new series on already in the USA? I keep an eye on both Teletoon and YTV here in Canada to make sure I do not miss the premiere when it starts

April 14th, it says on the official website.
Although, somewhere I was told that the Pilot was now or otherwise would be on the website earlier.

As much as I would love to see this series on BD, I don't see it happening unless the new series does very well. I still wish they would continue releasing the collector's editions of the other two books (seasons), but with the failure of the live action movie, I doubt that will happen either. It is unfortunate because the collector's edition looks so much nicer than the regular release.

EDIT: Has there been confirmation of a sequel to the live action film? I would for sure not watch it, but it could be good news for the animated series fans as far as a BD release or collectors editions of the DVDs

the first two episodes were on http://korranation.tumblr.com last weekend. I don't want to give anything away, but it's a great start to another chapter of Avatar.

As far as the original series goes, I only own the collector's edition of Book 1 on DVD and have been holding off buying Book 2 and 3 until Blu.

Thanks! I will keep an eye out for it here. Can't check stuff online since must of the USA stuff is block here in Canada for some reasons. With luck either YTV or Teletoon will have it on.

Unlike many others, I did not hate the movie. I feel it different in mood from the series but I find the kids in it did a pretty job. The main trouble is that there just was too much cram into a single movie. It should have been slipt into at least two movies.

Was there anything extra to the Collector's Edition(s)?

I actually thought they were all so sure of a sequel or even two next ones to make it a trilogy.
But after a quick on WikipediA, it basically states at the end of 2010 they hadn't figured it out yet.
And... then again, strangely enough, all over other websites they're so sure and that the second will even be out this year...
Now I'm totally confused. Either way, I'm sad about it already being churned into live-action, especially because of not being in a successful way.

But I wouldn't be surprised if there is at least one sequel, because it almost tripled its budget at the box-office.
Then again, the movie was baaahaaaaad... not even from my own view, just that it earned like 5 Razzies and all that...
That's like when you have Neutral, then there's the Oscar on the positive side, but then they're basically on the opposite end of the Neutral line.
So... it would be sad for film-making but good for money-making.
And... I think we know which path the industry will choose, and also Shamalalalala..lala.. is so set on doing it, I'm sure he would proceed...

Cool, two even. Were they on there temporarily or can I still see them now?

Yeah, that's also one of the things I was thinking about when thinking about a movie-version, like in what format it would fit.
I was thinking... one of the most likely things is to just do it in the fashion of the seasons.
So you have the element-names going on, then 3 epic-azz films, like "LOTR"-adventures, of about 3 hours each.
Cause you have to capture as many of these memorable... well, "memories" the fans have of this series, and that's quite a lot.
Man, I don't even want to think about it anymore, I'll just frustrate myself that I don't have the possibility to actually do it. XD

I think the collectors edition came with a preview of the book Avatar the Last Airbender: The Art of the Animated Series and the packaging is beautiful, but it has the regular book one housed inside of it. I would double check to be sure that's all, but I'm not home at the moment.

You mean the regular edition DVD-set is inside the special packaging?

But I was planning to buy that book separately anyway.
It's just a little on the expensive side I believe, or I'd have gotten it months ago already.

Yep it is the same exact thing inside, so if you don't care about fancy packaging it's really nothing special. I personally think it looks a lot better, so I bought it about a year or two ago. I don't even think you can still buy it now, at least I haven't seen it anywhere in a long time. The little book preview is nothing special either, just a little peek at what's inside.

I've seen it but I don't remember it exactly. I do remember it looking quite "special".
But I liked the look of the regular ones as well. They're pretty nicely themed and to-the-point.
And no, I don't think it's really available anymore. But oh well. Just curious about the quality of the DVDs.
Maybe I could download one to see first, but it would take a while to both find and download an exact DVD-rip I think...

At this point I doubt the original series will be released on blu. The series was not even produced in HD and is also in 4:3 ratio.

Legend of Korra on the other hand may have a much better chance since it's newer and is produced in HD. So here's hoping.

Well THAT part doesn't matter at all...
Like I also said before, who knows it was made with 16:9 AND 4:3 in mind.
Because at the time it would have been released in 4:3, yet widescreen was already coming to TV.
I mean, I never noticed anything "off" in the framing in the series, so it probably was made for 4:3.
But who knows, maybe they could remaster it for HD while framing in 16:9, if there IS anything drawn outside the 4:3 frame.
I know, even if it's just more scenery, the series would benefit from it.
But anyway, we'll see. Even if it's 4:3, it deserves an HD-transfer/remaster...
I still get the idea they would indeed do it during "Korra", cause it's probably no joke to the creators.

I never do this, but should they announce a Blu-ray version of the complete set of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I will pre-order it in a second.

I'm obsessed with this show, and I'm really really hoping the crazy success of Korra will convince them to release the original series and the new series on BD.

Two things:

1. To those asking about the limited edition, it had an exclusive bonus disc w/ featurette w/ the creators.

2. This still needs to go to the wishlist thread!

Question

I recently purchased Avatar: The Last Airbender seasons 1 to 3 on iTunes in SD (the only way it's available), as well as The Legend of Korra in HD on iTunes. The difference in visual quality between the two series, even on my iPhone 4S, is like night and day. I'm actually quite annoyed by the transfer of the first series, would buying the DVD and ripping them at full quality in any way make the edges less blocky with that staircase effect? It annoys me when I see the roundness of Anngs head get turned into a bunch of staircase looking lines. I'm debating whether I can buy the DVDs and rip the series myself to get a better quality or is this just the best there is?

Basically which has better quality, the iTunes standard definition or say a full quality DVD rip turned into a computer file like AVI or one that's compatible with the iPad 3?

That just doesn't sound right. Blocky and staircase-effect, even if it is SD.
I've watched a download of a DVD-rip and it looked quite fine apart from it being SD, and I watched it on a rather large 1080p-screen.
I can't be sure of the difference, but, again, what you described sounds quite bad. It might be it's something I just don't notice, but to me it was watchable.
And I usually notice and get annoyed by ugly details.

You could just try to download first, check if it makes any difference, and if it's good enough you could buy it.

Most of the time it is clear, it only happens with fast movement. Could be a limitation of the iPhone 4S, but Korra in HD does not have this issue. Seems to be an codec compression transfer limitation not a defect and it's suble but very notable on every episode.
