Anyone having dns lookup issues should remove these manual IP entries made in their hosts file tomorrow after the new ip's propagate to global dns servers. Although /flushdns works its best to let DNS do its job and not hardwire your hosts file.

Sure, but in some cases (like in my case), your ISP/corporate DSN may already have the new IP address, but your own computer still has the old address. And since there is a valid webpage on the old address (the one that informs you about the move), your own computer still thinks everything is okay. The flush just makes sure you own computer will get all new addresses.

Well the home page was down, but the forums would still work... strangely enough. Not many people on, maybe about a dozen or so.. but none of the posts stayed so I figured it was a downtime thing.
It seems to have happened on a number of my posts from then.. no worries though, nothing as important as the infamous SA0CD's post. ![]() |

I just checked it out by forcing the IP to the old forum IP, seems the forums were indeed not taken down properly
![]() I know we had the vBulletin options page open and prepared to shut down the old forum as one of the first things we did, but somehow in the chaos of moving we never actually did shut it down (only the regular site). The posts still exist on the old server, but I just don't see how we can merge them with the new server easily (duplicate IDs in the database and such will cause problems). I've shut down the old forums now so at least there will be no more posts made there. We'll see if we can recover the posts later. |

Any help for Vista Users??? I've tried everything so far in this thread but i'm still not able to view the 'Home' & 'News' pages (haven't tried any of the other links yet...)
Also, the Blu-ray.com banner is missing from the top of the page... Not sure what to do now... ![]() I tried adding the below text into the 'hosts' file, but it won't let me save it: 69.90.124.146 blu-ray.com 69.90.124.146 www.blu-ray.com 69.90.124.147 forum.blu-ray.com Vista is being retarded - LOL! That might work in some cases. However, many name servers cache (save) the IP address so they don't have to make a new lookup for every request and that forces you to wait until the data is refreshed in the name server cache with the new IP (which can take up to 24 hours if you're unlucky).

Either you wait for the new IP to propagate to your name servers or you use the "hosts"-file trick to force your Windows to resolve www.blu-ray.com to the new IP address. I'm not sure about the instructions for Vista, you could try searching for "vista" and "hosts" in Google.

Looks like you need administrator privileges to edit the file in Vista:

I searched 'Vista Hosts' and found the following instructions for updating the necessary file. Posted below for other Vista users: Changing your hosts file in Vista By default, if you try to modify your hosts file in Vista, it will not let you save it. It tells you that you don't have permission. To successfully modify the hosts file, run notepad.exe as an administrator and open the file. 1) Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories 2) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator" 3) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt 4) Click File -> Open 5) Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc" 6) Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)" 7) Select "hosts" and click "Open" 8) Make the needed changes and close Notepad. Save when prompted. |
