Which gain should i be looking at? I will have one window in the room contolled by blackout curtains. Window is to left of front soundstage.

A gain of 1.3 or lower should satisfy your needs, particularly with a high lumen projector.

correct me if i'm wrong..but isn't a special "silver" screen also required to make 3D work for a projector? I mean...you can't just use any old screen for this can you?

I am not an expert on 3D projectors and 3D TVs and do not own them. However, my understanding is that there are two types of 3D projectors.

There are 3D projectors that require active glasses (most 3D projectors in the North America). Active glasses are expensive, but their 3D projectors are much cheaper and they do not require a special screen.

There are projectors that require passive glasses (polarizer) like in the movie theaters. They tend to be more expensive and require special high gain 3D screens such as silver screens. If you show an ordinary 2D movie on those screens, they tend to be too bright and you will have to significantly reduce the output of the projector. An example of this type of projector is the LG CF3D projector. Its list price is $15,000.

Epson Home Cinema 5010 as Compared to Panasonic PT-AE7000: Review Update
http://www.projectorreviews.com/blog...review-update/
Quote:
Black levels are really good. I actually haven’t run it against the 8700UB, but I did put it up against the PT-AE7000 that’s here, and I’d have to say, there’s at least as big an advantage with the Epson Home Cinema 5010 when compared to the PT-AE7000, as “last year’s” Home Cinema 8700UB had against the older PT-AE4000.

In 2D, based on what I consider most important, Looks like the Epson has the picture quality advantage over the Panny. The Panny of course has a cool feature set, and the Epson jazzes its up with side by side picture viewing, etc.

Thanks for the input BD. I was planning on getting a 1.3 gain screen. So the epson 3010 should work quite well.

Art's review of this one isn't fully completed yet but as it looks now im definitely looking into getting the 8700ub imported from america as the blacks seem just as good as this new model and i don't need the 3d feature.

Cool. Im sure you'll notice a big difference in image quality. Some years has passed since that first ultra black model from epson came out.

Not that many mate but he does have a couple on youtube. This newest video i think is the best as it gives people a chance too get a little understanding of the black levels and picture modes in the end. Still hes written reviews are miles better.
