There is no point in releasing catalog titles in 3D, other than maybe Lion King, as that may look okay. Live-action would look atrocious, IMO.

Do they really think people are going to see this? The only people that enjoy 3D are younger people that probably haven't even heard of or seen Top Gun in 2D and they think by making this a gimmick it will bring in the $$$!?

3D needs to go away already, I don't see why studios like losing money

It will get my money. I'm in my 30's and have seen the film dozens of times.

3D is here to stay. If you don't like it, vote with your wallet.

you can keep telling yourself it will stay.. but it won't, its fading out already, numerous titles that were planning to come out in 3D decided against.. Making Catalog titles 3D is desperate and their only option left.. once these fail then 3D will slowly disappear..

Well, you're the one guy that will be alone in the theater.

I'm pretty sure people are. In films that have 2-D and 3-D showings, the 2-D showings are easily outgrossing the 3-D showings in the biggest films this year.

What titles planed for 3D are now not?

The only example was the first Part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows which was because the conversion couldn't be finished in time

There is no evidence 3D is fadding at all. Even with numerous botched efforts such as overly-dim projecters in my theaters, sub-par conversions, and 3D being wasted on terrible movies and yet big movies still bank in 3D premiums far more then the cost 3D added to the production. Not a single big summer blockbuster was a bust in 3D all managed to rank in millions in profit from 3D premiums even before the additional profit from the 3D Blu-Rays

Keep dreaming thats its fading

Do you have evidence for this? Even if percentages are higher for 2D since 3D tickets are more expensive that can still gross more in 3D

Not that it even matters because its about grosses not percentages. If a 3D movie grosses a billion dollars even if the 3D premiums make up only 20% of ticket sales that is still a huge profit that well exceeds the small cost 3D ads to the production of movies

With more failures like Pirates of the Carribean 4 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow who needs successes

The only lived action films released this year to have the majority of grosses come from 3-D were Transformers and Thor. Pirates, Potter, Cap, etc. all had less than 50% of the grosses come from 3-D. Here's the breakdown of the percentage of 3-D for the big movies this past summer:

Transformers - 60%
Thor - 60%
Pirates - 46%
Potter - 43%
Captain America - 40%

Notice how while the summer drags on, the percentages keep dropping for each big movie, only one of which, Transformers, successfully utilized the 3-D camera system. The rest were conversions and sloppy conversions at that. Pirates, which I heard had awful 3-D was actually shot in 3-D, but that didn't seem to make much of a difference.

IMO converting a 2D movie into 3D is akin to colorizing a black and white film.

Thanks for reading my post NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every single one of the movies you listed grossed more in 3D premiums then 3D added to the production. Therefore the 3D on all those titles was a success. It doesn't matter if 3D gets a majority of sales all that matters is that the revenue from 3D exceeds the cost. And it almost always does with a few horrible flops as exceptions

Also half of Transformers 3 was converted and I challenge anyone to tell the difference between the native 3D and the converted parts

3D hate isn't based in any rational thought. Its simply a resistance to change and a strange reaction to anything new.

3D haters can't seem to keep anything strait. One minute they will critize 3D because of too many conversions and then they will complain when a movie announces native 3D. They will complain that 3D has too many pop out effects and then call 3D movies without pop out effects "pointless 3D."

How anyone can post on Blu-Ray.com and be so opposed to home theater advancements that make movies more lifelike is bizzare.

Like i stated many times, i dont hate 3D its just not for me, it hurts my eyes and gives me a headache.. It has nothing to do with not being able to adapt to change, i adapted from VHS to DVD to BD just fine, and adapted to many other things in my life without any issues.. My issue with 3D is that whenever I want to see a movie when its in 3D at my theater they are usually only playing it in 2D a few times a day, I like to take my father to the movies every now and then, and when he is interested in a title thats playing in 3D we usually have to pass because its not being shown in 2D, and dont say its the area where i live because i live in NY the WORLDS biggest market, you would think they would give us options!.. This reminds me of when HD DVD was around and people were getting all defensive when other people would bring up how HD DVD is a fad and is dying, I understand why people would get defensive and angry over taht, they spent all this money on a new product that could of had the potential of fading out, and sure enough it did.. I hope 3D stays around for all you guys that wasted money on it, it would suck for all of you guys if did in fact faded out. I believe Studios are turning these catalog titles into 3D and bringing them back into theaters to see if 3D really can work, its a test. Personally I think if Lion King, Titanic and Top Gun all bomb in the theaters in 3D you will start seeing less and less new movies coming out in theaters being 3D.. Thats just me

Well, if you've already seen Top Gun a dozen times, seeing it in 3D, is not going to make it any better. It'll be the same movie, that you've seen 12 times in 2D!

Don't forget the $31.99 BD price vs. the $9.99 price for the exisiting 2D version.
I'm not against 3D, I just don't see why it has to be pushed so hard down the consumer's throat. Obviously we've all seen(at least I hope we all did) how 3D can be done, sucessfully, in Avatar. On the other hand we've seen how it can flop: Clash of the Titans, Pirates, & Captain America.
With that said, I just wish 3D BD's weren't more expensive than their 2D counterparts. You would think if the studios really want to push 3D, then start selling 3D BD's at the same price. I'm sure that would get people to invest in the tech, at a faster pace.

If nobody puts a gun to your head and orders you to buy then 3D is not being shoved down anyones throut. We live in a free market and the industry will always try to sell you the latest thing but nobody is forcing you to buy.

The point of 3D is to make money. Without 3D premiums both in the theater and home market there would be no extra money. Rarely if ever do people go to see something just because its in 3D

Claiming its like HD-DVD is beyond ridiculous and arrogant

HD-DVD was competing against Blu-Ray for the same market. Inevidibly one format had to lose and it happened to be HD-DVD

3D Blu-Ray is not competing with 2D Blu-Ray and it doesn't follow that one has to win and another lose. 3D is just an added feature for the Blu-Ray format or in theaters.

Any more ridiculous comparisons to make

Well, it looks as though the thread is now off-topic. As much as I love seeing this debate rage on, this is not the thread for it.

Top Gun will be an experience in theatrical 3D. I never got to see the film in theatres (was too young), and love 3D! So, this will make me very happy!

rickah88 is right! When theaters are presenting 3D movies at more screens, and showing times than the 2D, then 3D is being shoved down the consumer's throats.
