With all of the uncertainty regarding this promotion (both from a consumer AND employee standpoint), I took it upon myself to go straight to the source. I CALLED SUBWAY'S HOME OFFICE! And, here is the skivey on the sitch.
Promotion Start Date = October 1st. Only advertising begins before that. No promotional items are to be given out prior to the start date.

Fans of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception can explore their local Subway stores this weekend to get early access to the game's multiplayer mode.
Beginning this weekend, those who buy specially marked 30 oz. drinks will get a code that can be redeemed online through a special Subway promotional site. The redeem site goes live Friday and most stores will have cups then, too; the promotion runs through the month of October. Uncharted 3 hits the PS3 on Nov. 1.
A new TV ad, posted here, begins running during The Amazing Race on CBS on Sunday and also on CBS series including The Big Bang Theory and Survivor, Fox's Family Guy and during NFL broadcasts on CBS and NBC.

How did getting the full competitive multiplayer mode out a month before game launch change the work flow for the studio?
Robert Cogburn, game designer at Naughty Dog:

That said it does change the mentality of the studio. We are biting at the nails for October 1st right now. The public will be able to experience multiplayer without single-player and that means we need to tailor the experience as best possible for someone new coming into the game. We are very excited to see how the skill level of players will change throughout the month of October.
After making the deal with Subway, we were pretty excited to get the game into players' hands a month early. Of course, this meant that the multiplayer portion of the game had to be complete and in downloadable form slightly earlier than the final disc. This didn't change the way we work, just how we concentrated on the multiplayer levels. We set earlier deadlines for our competitive maps and systems, as well as making sure we had as many test hours on the system as possible. We are really proud of the product and want the highest number of people as possible to experience the game, and this Subway beta is the perfect partnership.
Anything you can say about how the multiplayer has evolved from the beta earlier this year?
Cogburn: Lots. With the beta, we had 1.5 million people download it. With that many people checking out the game, it means you get a lot of opinions and you need to listen to them. Now, not all the opinions are valid but when you see hundreds of people mention a certain aspect of the game, you take a look at that aspect and consider what people are talking about. It's always a difficult decision because there's, usually, a purchase behind the functionality of everything. Changing just one aspect can have ripple effects across the entire experience.
I'll give you an example, sprint. Sprint in Uncharted 3 is a huge addition to multiplayer and there were a number of debates, internally, about it going into the game. When it was decided that sprint would go in, we made sure there was an angle of control enforced on the left-analog stick (the left stick on your controller you use to move Drake around). This control on the left-analog stick kept players from turning on a dime and avoiding gunfire too easily. We, Naughty Dog, felt this was the direction to take and stuck with it.
Soon after the beta went live there were a number of complaints about controls and one consistent complaint was sprint. So, after a deep discussion about how to handle certain cases where turning on a dime just should not occur, we removed the control from sprint and made it flexible. When we had playtest with people who had played the beta, they often mentioned how much better sprint felt – progress!
So the beta was huge. The feedback from the community would have been impossible to get otherwise. And, because the community surrounding the Beta was so great, Naughty Dog was able to create a better multiplayer game. Now we get to wait and see how people react to all our changes.
The beta was a huge win for Uncharted 3. You can never really tell how people are going to play a game until you let it go into the wild, and the beta allowed us to do that and still get to make changes. We took note of everything, collected stats, read the boards, played with the public, everything we could do to get hard numbers. We then took a hard look at the game and fixed the things that were obvious issues, while making minor tweaks to other systems to make them more fun.
Any other point you'd like to make about the promotion?
Cogburn: You get to carry over your experience from the beta. That means that anything you unlock up to rank 35 you will have the second you stick your fresh copy of Uncharted 3 in your PS3. And be ready to face the Dogs, we will be playing the beta so keep your eyes open.
The fact you get a month early into multiplayer, with your progress continuing when retail comes out on November 1st, is something we're really excited about people experiencing. We think this is a first of such an experiment and we are awfully excited to see the results.
Oh boy... if the Subway promo is region locked to the US, people gonna be mighty pissed about the unlocks carrying over from the beta. Even if the promo is available to all regions, the next question will become whether the US beta software unlocks will carry over to other region retail copies of U3?
I gots a feelin' that things gonna get UGLY!

I'm sorry, but I don't care about the international players (canada excluded) because they are the ones who make the online game LAG. Brazil, Japan, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Australia (or Austria... I never quite figured that one out), China, and god knows where else make the online gaming experience horrible. U.S. (and Canada) players have a faster connection with Naughty Dog's servers which makes for the best gaming experience possible. They can pick up their copy on 11/1/11. I don't feel bad for them.
