![]() ![]() Sister Gertrude, played by Anita Ekberg (La Dolce Vita, War and Peace), has been suffering from severe migraines since having a tumor removed during a brain surgery operation, and she depends on morphine to ease her sufferings. While serving as the head ward of a geriatric hospital, she devises various schemes to support her addiction, and she descends into deceit, aberrant sexual encounters, and madness. Already the subject of vicious rumors among the staff and patients of the hospital, Sister Gertrude's reputation comes into question when several patients are brutally murdered. Is she being framed, or has she truly crossed the ultimate edge? The 1979 Italian giallo, Killer Nun, directed by Giulio Berruti, was banned overseas due to the fact that it depicts nuns engaging in decidedly un-nun-like behavior. Underneath the controversial subject matter, however, lies a solidly atmospheric suspense thriller and an interesting social commentary that was reportedly based on a true event where a Belgian nun killed patients at a retirement home in order to steal from them. This film is relatively tame by today's standards, although one death scene will not particularly endear one to needles if one has a phobia of them. The music score is beautifully haunting, and some impressive camerawork, especially an overhead shot of Sister Gertrude as she discovers a body hanging above her, elevates the end result above its sleazy narrative content. Be on the lookout for Alida Valli (The Third Man, Suspiria) as Mother Superior. Paola Morra, who stars as a fellow nun worker at the hospital, contributes to some of this film's more memorable sequences. This Blue Underground disc sports good picture quality, despite some noise, and the detail is quite impressive in certain shots. I have no complaints about the audio quality of the Italian track. The only extra is Giulio Berruti, where he discusses the origins and inspiration of the feature. |

As I was posting my above review to Letterboxd just now, I read the following comment from another reviewer, and I had a good laugh...
“Probably not the movie Anita Ekberg would have preferred I watch on the day of her death, but my DVD of La Dolce Vita was on a higher shelf and I didn't feel like reaching.” |

I guess this one doesn't get much love, but I kind of adore it. It's not as bouncing-off-the-walls-crazy as you might expect going into it (I certainly expected something a bit more salacious, steering in the direction of Ken Russell's "The Devils" plus heroin/morphine abuse), but it's just weird enough to be a winner for me. Love the hospital setting, and Anita Ekberg is a blast in it. Joe Dallesandro isn't given much to do here, but he is nice to look at. I was hoping Alida Valli had a bigger role as well, but she is only in a couple of scenes. In any event, it's hard for me to knock a flick about an opoid-abusing nun who thinks she's killing the elderly in her drug-induced blackouts. The most insane part is that it's (loosely) based on a true story.
