This happened once with my copy of The Negotiator. I only had one BD player at the time (PS3) so I had no means of testing it in another machine. I bought a new copy and it works fine.

For some reason they just suddenly fail even though they played flawlessly the day before!!
That sucks I can't believe Watchmen Ultimate failed, I'd seriously contact the studio because it is a design flaw not a user error.

If you have an input for a flash drive on your player you may want to try that.

i have in my 83 a 4gb & in the 93 & 8gb flash drive both wiped and still won't work. also tried switching to the internal 1gb storage; same results.

Be sure that BD-Live or Internet connection is being made for the disk by your player. Also, you might had data stored for AvP on your PS3. Sometimes that area gets corrupted and you need to purge it. Not sure about the Oppo, but it may be worth a try to look at what your settings are. The PS3 for sure has problems with the Internet connection isn't there for some discs.

all data on the PS3 & both oppos have been purged. still no playing.

I would also go to your BD settings and change some stuff there...it always helps to fiddle around with things =) Sony has added a ton of stuff which might be conflicted with the disc. Maybe turn on/off 24Hz

my tv doesn't support 24hz so it's automatically off in both players (not sure where that even came from) no settings have ever been changed and i mentioned i was able to watch it before many times on the ps3 & 83 (i just got the 93 a couple good months ago)

I read with AVP-R that people were having the exact same problem. Their solution was to go to your BD/DVD settings under System Settings and adjust your 24Hz ouput settings. Apparently a very Common Problem for some blu-rays.

i did just put in AvP-R and it loaded up instantly, no problem, also tried Jumper & Die Hard (the last one) and all worked. i wanted to try those because they are all 20th Century Fox movies. all, except the first AvP worked without a hitch.

looks like i'm gonna have to pick up another copy of that.

I am worried that this title may not be playable possibly on anything else but 24Hz. Maybe due to a common firmware upgrade or something on all the players. Wouldn't be the first Fox title that was glitchy (e.g. Sunshine) Unfortunetly, we can't test this theory. Unless someone else can try putting it and switch this setting to see.

Here is another post about the subject:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1276554

Seems there are alot of problems with the 2007 and pre 2007 blu-rays. Many may now be going defective. But it still sounds batch related. Meaning only certain discs made by certain manufactures etc ...

Since AvP came out in early 2007, it could mean that they are all going to fail. Or only some released at a particular time. Maybe the first batch or something.

Prestige also had the same problem, but there was a replacement program, stating it was a bad pressing. See the thread above.

Maybe we should sticky this post ... and track how many other blu-ray disc's go bad.

I think your only option will be to contact Fox Home Video department, and state the disc has gone bad and can no play no longer and demand a replacement. Odds are your aren't the only one, and they have since fixed the problem and repressed the disc. They will probably mail you an envelope to mail in the defective disc, once they receive it they will mail you the new one.

Default the disc was bad!

yep, i was going to mcdonalds for a chicken club sandwich & small fries and there was walmart so i took a detour. found it (yep, can't believe it but there was a copy to be had) bought it and got home, had dinner and then popped in the new one and it started right away, no problem!

i guess it proves that sometimes, even blu-ray disc can simply go bad. not a scratch on it, not a crack, nothing but it won't play at all.

happy i got the new one and i think i'm gonna go and watch it for old times sake!

that and the fact that i don't know how much time i've got left with this copy!

I had one instance of "disc rot" with a Blu Ray. I can't remember the disc exactly but I think it was "the prestige"????It looked like the disc itself "delaminated" I never took any kind of picture of it, but there were small little dots that you could see through.

Have you looked closely at the disc to make sure there isn't any damage of any kind?

According to the AVS forums (link above) this was due to a defective batch. There is a replacement program in effect, did you get a replacement for Prestige?

I replaced it via Amazon so it wasn't that big of a deal. I will tell you that I had people accuse me of "lying" about it though. I should have taken a picture (I might have tried and couldn't get a good photo) but there was more than one person that said I was making it up.

"Blu-ray tech is perfect, it must be something wrong with you!"

I hate it when people are in denial like that.

Any technology can have imperfections and defects .... any and all. Especially the first versions of something. Which is the case here. Same issues occurred with DVD's. Not surprised to see history repeating itself.

Here are a few pictures from Venom5 over at AVS. If I remember correctly the bad batches used a chemical which had been contaminated with impurities which, over time, reacted negatively with the other materials in the disc.

I'm not trying to belittle your experience at all, it's a frustrating one to be sure, but I wouldn't be hung up on the experience. This happens with all burgeoning media formats. the forums at AVS don't indicate a large scale failure of discs, there is a VERY limited # of titles and a VERY limited # of people complaining about failed discs. being that it was early on in the format a few percentage points more than the norm will have some bad discs that's all that it is. a few people may even have more than the norm (as evidenced by a few people here and in the avs forums) but this Is NOT a widescale problem and doesn't appear to be affecting a lot of people (otherwise believe you me those 2-3 pages of posts over a year would have EXPLODED into 100+ pages). keep an eye out of defective discs of course but don't worry that your whole collection is gonna go bad

I've come across the occaisonal bad blu-ray before. I had a copy of Taken that worked in one of my players but in NO other player out there that I could test, a week later it went bad.

It might not be the disk. I could very well be that newer Blu-ray players simply won't play those disks. I would contact 20th Century Fox and ask for a replacement.

Before you purchase, try contacting 2-0th Century Fox with the following link/contact form:

the problem with that for me is that it use to play fine in my 83 (AvP). however, over the course of time, i got the PS3 slim & the 93. at least a year or so has past since i last played the movie and it now would not play in any of the 3 players, in fact it would do nothing in 2 player and sit on loading in the other eventually just going back to the home screen. i've got lots of disc, much older than AvP and i tried a couple of older disc and they played just fine. and it could be any type of media. i had a copy of "children of men" on HDDVD and it too failed to play after a while, on both my toshiba and xbox player. got a new copy (about a year after HDDVD went out of business) it plays perfectly in both the toshiba & xbox HDDVD players.

i stated yesterday that i bought a new copy of the same movie and it started playing within 3 seconds of being read so for me, it was in fact the disc. they are like anything else, out of the blue (pardon the pun) one time when you go to use something you have always used in the past, it will either not work right anymore or not work at all.

it happens, i'm just glad i got another copy and it works.
