It's been suggested that digital downloads will replace movies on discs.

It could happen but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion.

I see Blu Rays as a value given it's sometimes ~50GB already stored on a very reliable media that's ready to play. I'm not a fan of having my stuff on hard drives.

And,.. I've never bought on Itunes either and never will. I'm not going to pay for MP3's I would rather go buy the CD.

Considering how woefully the US lags in download speed, wouldn't the telecoms & cable companies have to upgrade the infrastructure and improve service for dl'ing HDM to become truly feasible and attractive to the consumer? What incentives do they have to do so?

There's a difference btwn movies and music though. Music is inherently made to be portable, this is why the walkman and ipods have been so successful. Movies are a static format... it just doesn't make much sense to have it portable. A majority of people like having a physical format nontheless. It's mainly fanboys who push DLC because in a way it justifies their choice of investment. Just like HDDUDers

While I agree, there is no way this applies to the general populace. This does assume that you will be allowed to move it...look at Xbox Live. You lose a lot of usage if you buy a new Xbox and transfer the downloads.

You've never impulse bought while browsing on iTunes? I have.
I said it would cut down impulse buys, not eliminate them.

Don't know about the UK, but median download speed in France is (according to this story) 17 MB/sec, compared to 1.97 MB/sec in the US.

Or try Googling "US lagging download speed."

There are five countries with an average internet speed over 10 meg:

1. Japan
2. Korea
3. Finland
4. Sweden
5. France

Anyway, my discussion about download rates was purly future-related. IMO movies on discs are here to stay UNTIL digital distribution becomes practical. Which thankfully it is not yet.

With my music i've actualy switched back to CDs, though I have some albums on iTunes that I still have to replace.
