I wasn't happy when Stallone announced that he was going to do a Death Wish remake and I am certainly not happy with Willis doing it now. He just doesn't have the enthusiasm to play any character now.

Oh geez, 2016 just granted me my politically-correct Death Wish remake I'd always hoped for. I hope it's PG-13 too so those Deadpool parents can take their 8-year-old and not get a babyshitter.

That is an absolutely awesome film. I am a huge fan of the vigilante genre, and that is one of the best ever.

Bruce Willis phones it in too much these days, he would be a terrible Paul Kersey.

Bruce Willis makes me sad,why? because he should've had two or three Oscars by this point but he just takes the money and makes dumb movies.

Looks like BIG BAD WOLVES directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado have exited DEATH WISH, the MGM and Paramount remake of the 1974 hit that Bruce Willis will star in, reprising the reluctant vigilante made famous by Charles Bronson. The film is based on the 1972 novel of the same name. The story follows an architect whose life is ruined after his wife his killed and his daughter is sexually assaulted. When the cops come up short, the man takes justice into his own hands by hunting down the suspects himself.

So why did Keshales and Papushado leave the project? Well its simple...“creative differences”. Deadline got a translated social media post from the filmmakers that pretty much explains the whole situation, check it out:

Relief. Finally a bit of breathing room. You probably remember that a few months ago we were bombarded with greetings and congratulations on receiving our first Hollywood job, Death Wish. You might also remember that Navot and I insisted not to comment on the story or on any of your excited posts about it… not even with a “like”.

It’s not like we became snobs overnight. And it’s not like anybody prevented us from speaking out, it’s just that we found ourselves in a terrible situation.

On the one hand, we were indeed offered a dream job, we were indeed offered a legendary salary, and we did indeed pass a stressful and amazing audition with the presidents of MGM and Paramount, and we even met and got the approval of one of the toughest most intimidating stars in Hollywood… yes, yes, Bruce Willis himself saw Big Bad Wolves and thought we were the right people for this violent mission.

On the other hand, the news caught us by surprise, because in reality there were huge differences between our vision and the vision of the studio with the famous roaring lion… we wanted to stay away from the original and problematic (albeit fun to watch) Michael Winner film, and move more towards the spirit of the original novel by Brian Garfield – an excellent minimalist novel that never got the cinematic treatment it deserved. We wanted to follow the vision of the director who originally was set to make it, but ultimately was not allowed to – Sidney Lumet. Lumet wanted to direct a film about a simple man, he even thought of Jack Lemmon for the lead, which experiences a terrible tragedy and then falls to the depths of hell.

When we imagined the thriller in our minds we thought Taxi Driver, Falling Down… with a bloodcurdling finale like Sicario. Unfortunately, the time table for the project did not allow us to make the big changes we wanted to make to the script, and as time passed we realized that we were not going to get what we wanted for this project.

Last night, after long deliberations we finally decided to leave the project. It was not easy. To know that you’re giving up money, fame, the opportunity to work with a big star… that you’re kicking the door in Hollywood’s face… knowing that you’re disappointing everybody who supported and encouraged you and wanted you to fulfill your dreams – All this can really mess with your head and make you doubt yourself. And so it did.

But anybody who knows us even for a minute, knows that we’ve never compromised on our vision. These were three grueling months, three months during which time I walked around wearing sunglasses because I was afraid to answer uncomfortable questions. Today I can finally take them off and say thank you for your support, your embrace and all the love. So what now? A little peace and quiet, a lot of patience and above all, love.


It sucks to read stuff like that because It looks like they put a lot of work into the project only to hit a wall with the studio. Seems “creative differences” is the new thing in Hollywood.

Thanks for the info. I didn't hear about this one till now.
I like how the planned director was going for more of the novel version of the story verses the film version with Bronson, which would give this film a more fresh approach to the story. I can see why he bailed out when his vision wasn't part of the plan.

Sounds like the studio might be wanting a more straight-forward remake of the film? I've never read the novel so I don't know how it differs from the Charles Bronson film. But if it's significant, then it would be interesting to see a more faithful adaptation rather than just a rehash.

It's not that there isn't still horrible crimes committed, but the original takes place in NYC in the 70's when the crime rate had skyrocketed, the infrastructure was falling apart, there were numerous strikes and the Bronx was burning!

You couldn't simply remake that film today without major story or location changes because that City doesn't exist anymore. In 1973, there were 1680 reported murders in NYC. In 1974, the year the film was released, there were 1554. In 2015, there were only 339 with a population that's larger by 1 million people and almost all 339 were between people who knew each other and in a fairly large percentage of the cases, both perpetrator and victim had criminal records.

In today's NYC, there are multi-million dollar apartments on the Bowery. It's really unbelievable. Much of the original film took place on the West Side in the '70s. Today, unless you're in a rent-controlled apartment and have been for decades, you have to be rich to live there.

Back then, many New Yorkers would have welcomed a vigilante and did in the form of Bernhard Goetz, who shot four teens on the subway who asked him for money, although that happened in 1984. But today, with crime relatively low, a vigilante would be considered to be a dangerous criminal.

So the movie has to take a different approach for it to be believable IMO. In its day, the movie hit home because so many people were so scared of crime.
