In other news for the HD-DVD camp, just two days after Sony DADC announced that they'd replicated their milestone 10 millionth 50GB Blu-ray Disc (click here for the Video Business story), the HD-DVD Promotions Group quickly countered with a little damage control, making sure everyone knew that the DVD Forum was close to approving the spec for a triple-layer 51GB HD-DVD disc (click here). However, industry sources are telling us that NONE of the existing Toshiba HD-DVD players and drives are currently capable of reading them. Indeed, the Video Business story indicates that once the spec is finalized, "compatibility with current HD DVD player and recorders can be investigated." According to reports from Bits readers who were on at CEATAC this weekend, Toshiba reps confirmed to attendees that the triple-layer disc configuration would require a hardware change, meaning that the existing drives are not firmware updatable.
From reading the article of AVwatch (Japanese), I understand that they did not mention HD DVD TL is compatible or not, but I read that HD DVD-DL/DVD SL or HD DVD SL/DVD DL are certainly won't work in current player.

They SHOULD agree that this is a huge blow to hd-dvd... because it IS!

A few weeks back, their beloved RDJam was gloating over the announcement of the TL51 (and I remember his posts around that time, suggesting that it was bigger than the Paramount news... and added a smug "<giggle>" or two in there). He got everyone's hopes up over there. Then rumors of how quickly TL51 discs were going to hit the market... maybe even by this Christmas!

Yea, right. A nice dose of reality is what they need right about now. A reality that a lot of us over on this forum have known for a long time.

It already isn't enough. It's fine for video, but you will not get HD audio with it.

All this tells me is that Toshiba will continue to fight this lost cause until the Paramount deal expires, and they too back out.

The morale of those companies must SUCK right now. People dragging their butt, and muttering under their breath. I bet that is were most of our neutral supporters come from.

My favorite quote so far from the thread:

HD DVD 15GB/30GB have consistently proven to be more then enough, no matter how much Blu-ray fans wish it wasn't so.
15GB/30GB is more than enough huh? LOL

And let's face it... 51gb will probably not be enough very soon either, what with HD extras and more and more advanced interactive features... not to mention longer or multiple versions of movies.

Hahahaha. Nice, but I've never joined over there. Don't care to either. I think it is a simple matter of me not liking the format and/or design of the forum over there...too legacy looking for me. Not to mention filled with rabid, illogical HD DVD fanboys,...I'd be on the Internet all day long refuting their baseless claims over there...oh wait...

Future Shop recently had to put up the corrections stating that HD DVD players are 1080i, not 1080p as advertised in the flyers.
One of my best friends has a huge home theater set-up and he DL'ed the new firmware for his Toshiba XA2 for 1080p/24 support while I was over there a couple weeks ago. This guy is 100% pro-HD-DVD...maybe more. Anyway, we fired up "300" to watch it at 1080p/24 on his JVC RS-1 projector and we had lip synch issues (which he corrected via his pre-amp after much tweaking) and then we noticed frame-drop issues. I haven't heard that much swearing in awhile. After he tinkered with menu settings and checked his inputs (which didn't help) we decided to go on AVS and see if there was a problem. I haven't been over there in awhile and I didn't know there was an issue with the HD-DVD XA2 2.5 firmware. He didn't know either.

After reading a few pages of posts I said, "You should've gotten a Blu-ray player."
His reply, "F*** you."

Ah, good times...

They could go with their combo solution. Glue two TL51's back to back and make a 102gb "flipper".

Before you know it HD-DVD's will be approaching a half-inch in thickness!

Can you imagine the uproar when (if ever) a new TL51 title comes out and has to have a warning label "This Title Will Not Play on 1st Generation DL30 Players" on it? Will there be two HD-DVD versions of these titles?

Now we know how Toshiba plans to make more stand-alone sales. (Do you suppose Toshiba will offer a trade-in program for those who bought 1.0?) It could also how they plan to dominate shelf space in the stores - two HD-DVD versons for each title!

Let the gloatfest continue!!!

They'll probably have a name change to keep confusion down. Maybe SHD DVD(Super HD DVD).

With a new catchphrase "The Look And Sound Of Perfect, Until Such Time As 3.0 Arrives"

When I proved to James why a TL-51 disc would be needed for HD-DVD by A+B, all he could answer was ...

"But .. But ... At least HD-DVD players are cheaper !"
Hillarity ensued.

If they are having difficulty going more than 3 layers, then they will most likely continue to bump up the gigs per layer.

First 15gb, then 17, followed by 19, 21, 23, 25.

25gb is a nice number...

Talking Serves them right!

The HD DUD fans have been beating the drum for months now about Blu-ray's "incomplete spec" and "obsolete players" while they boast about all this great interactive HDi crap.

Please. This is too funny! Most of us BD fans don't give a rat's a$$ about that stuff, or we're ok with it because we all know deep down inside that we'll either upgrade if we care, or just wait for a simple firmware update on the PS3 and we'll all instantly have Profile 1.1 (PIP) and Profile 2.0 (BD-Live).

All BD players now offer more space and bandwidth for superior hi-bit picture quality and lossless sound via PCM or Dolby TrueHD. We also have seamless branching and room for multiple lossless soundtracks and subtitles and extra features. And Blu-ray was designed from the ground up to be 1080p. Many BD players also do 1080p24 which is trouble for many of the Toshiba players.

They're sad because they know that their format doesn't have enough capacity even on dual-layer discs. Too bad!
