What a joke!!

and they have little or no intention of watching Avengers Assemble.

Two of my best friends love super hero movies, but have never read a comic book. I asked them if we were going to see The Avengers and both thought I was on about the TV series. A lot of people aren't like us, they don't follow movie news or reviews, they go to the cinema on orange Wednesday and pick something based on the film titles.

I don't think it's a great name, Marvel's Avengers would have been better but I think the concern over people being confused is valid. People on a message board about movies are not a good indicator of the general public.

They're not going to last long on my Death-Match-Island. Unless they bring an Oddjob-style lined with steel bowler hat or a machine-gun-umbrella for protection....

You're right of course we're far from the norm.

Absolutely. We're flooded in all of this geeky pop culture, not everyone else is. I know a couple of people this week who I've spoken to who have assumed it was something to do with the 60s TV show.

And it's worth repeating - not everyone is going to hear about this film by seeing a poster or a trailer and so seeing a Hulk next to the title. Some will just see or hear the name in isolation or on a cinema's listings. I agree that Disney are over-reacting slightly by changing the name but I think those who are saying (not just here) "There was no need to change it at all, no-one was going to get confused, it's gay!" are only seeing the world through their own narrow perspective.

Exactly. 'Would a rose by any other name...' and all of that. And, as I said in the steelbook thread, the irony is that some overseas collectors will be scrambling to get our release because of the variant title whereas some people on here will be moaning about being stuck with it.

At the end of the day people can import a version with the 'correct' title on if they want, there's not going to be a shortage of Avengers titles around the world.

They really think we're idiots over here, they renamed Fast 5 to Fast and Furious 5, Little Fockers to Meet The Parents: Little Fockers and Live Free or Die Hard to Die Hard 4.0. They seem to think we are incapable to tying two films to each other in a franchise unless it has the title spelled out to us.

Well, to be fair Live Free or Die Hard doesn't really mean anything in the UK. It's not that we wouldn't be able to link it to previous Die Hard movies just that the title doesn't work for us in its own right.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone became Sorceror's Stone for the US, presumably because WB thought they wouldn't know what a philosopher was.

As for the American Pie changes, it's Universal playing safe and making sure that people know it's related to the American Pie franchise and not American Beauty, American Werewolf or anything else with American in the title. I don't think they really needed to be concerned, but it just makes double sure there's no confusion.

For years we could cope with Raiders of the Lost Ark, and knew it was an Indiana Jones movie, but that didn't stop it suddenly becoming Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark on the packaging of the last VHS release (and stuck ever since). The Final Conflict (onscreen title) became Omen III The Final Conflict (later packaging), X2 (onscreen title) became X2: X-Men United (initial packaging), The Horror Show (onscreen title) became House III The Horror Show (packaging, and not even a House movie). We even got a film called Cries and Shadows that became The Exorcist III Cries and Shadows (Italian horror movie, totally unrelated).

Maybe the next Transformers film will be called Transformers Transform? I hate the name change just call the film The Avengers like the animated series, audiences expecting bowler hats need not apply.

I guess it's Scarlet Johansson in a cat-suit that's confusing everyone!

Agreed, totally!

I'm right in thinking a good 99.9% of movie watchers/movie buyers can see.

So seeing the artwork I can judge for myself that X2 is related to X-Men and The Avengers, looking at Iron Man, Hulk etc on the cover, I'm fairly safe in betting this film has nothing to do with Steed and the 60's TV show.

I will import and have The Avengers in my collection not 'Marvels Avengers Assemble: The One Where The Super-Heros Join Up Together!'

they made a good choice on Die Hard 4.0 though. Fits the techie theme much better and lacks the cheese factor of the American title

we may get lucky and just have the big A artwork for the Uk releases.
If not, then I'll be tempted to import (depending on cost/artwork)

A little annoyed about the name change as well - but can understand why somewhat.
Was with a friend whom I go to the cinema with regularly. He knows little about comic book origins - but does enjoy watch the movies when they hit the cinemas - but knows little of their origins (much like myself, enjoy the movies, but don't particularly like the actual comics, but he is a little more clueless then myself).
Was last with him a few months ago and there was a teaser posters for The Avengers - with just the A logo on display. I told him that is for The Avengers and its one I would like to see. He then said that he never liked the original TV show or like the 1998 movie at all. I then realized he had no idea of the Avengers being related to the Marvel characters (I had recently seen Captain America and Thor with at the cinema).

Another chap I was speaking to at work recently said he loved comic book movies and especially loved Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the recent Hulk movie - so I then asked him if he was looking forward to The Avengers - thinking I had changed the subject, he stated he hated the 1998 version and didn't watch the TV series - when I corrected him he stated he had no idea there was a movie featuring all those characters.

I understand the name change - but don't like Avenger's Assemble. Would of preferred The Avenger Initiative.

To be fair they change the titles of UK releases and we all change the name of French releases.

Ice Cold in Alex was changed to Desert Attack for its US release.

The Emperor’s Journey (French release) was changed to March of the Penguins for the UK and US release.

I think Marvel's The Avengers would have still been best if they really wanted to change it!

I just hope the BD release doesn't have assemble on it, maybe by then people will know it's the Marvel one!

Disney could do everyone a favour and release the film with a reversible cover, and seamlessly branch the film with two title cards if they don't just port over the US BD for the UK disc.

For those interested here's 20 minutes of B-Roll footage of The Avengers movies whatever it's called. Beware possible spoilers.

Hopefully don't do the same as The Ghost where the UK title card in the film looks very tacked on. We got the correct title based upon the original novel but rest of the world and film was made as Ghost Writer as people overseas would think The Ghost was a supernatural film.
