Here's the review, Dickieduvet:
Blow Out Blu-ray REVIEW ![]() A couple of notes: 1.If you cannot play Region-A discs, this release is a good alternative. Aside from the fact that its transfer was struck from a dated source (most likely an older master provided by MGM), it is just fine. There are no traces of lab tinkering (to make the film look modern). So, whatever denoising corrections you see, they were more than likely introduced when the master was prepared. This isn't surprising. What you have here is an older but still raw transfer. 2. The Criterion release uses a new transfer from a brand new scan which was approved by director Brian De Palma. It is also framed at 2.40:1 as opposed to the 2.35:1 on the Carlotta disc. Nothing to worry about there, even if you have a projector. Depth and color reproduction are the two areas that benefit the most. Criterion's release is clearly superior. 3. The audio is also fine, though I lean towards the lossless track on the Criterion release. 4. The big bonus here are the extras. Completely different again (done by Fiction Factory). From what I can tell, the video interviews were done at the same time the ones for the Dressed to Kill release were recorded (one long interview with each participant, cut for each film). 5. This release also comes in a black case. All in all, I'd say that together with the Criterion release, you have the definitive presentation of Blow Out - two discs, great new transfer from Criterion, plus a decent one from Carlotta, and a ton of outstanding supplemental features. ![]() Have a great weekend. Wow!! When comparing the screencaps, The Criterion is lightning years ahead in Transfer quality!! Almost looks like DVD/BD comparison on a few of those screenies.
Shame as I'll give this a miss now. Really wanted it to be on par with the US release quality wise. Wonder how the Australian edition compares with the Criterion in regards to the Transfer?? Heard a few folks say it's the same transfer. Could Umbrella use the same transfer?? Hmmmmm...... |

Criterion did their own transfer - from a new scan. It is hands-down superior. Especially if you project, the difference is very easy to see. Though I must say that perhaps the biggest and most obvious difference is the improved color grading, then depth. This isn't that obvious while looking at screencaptures.
Australian release - I doubt another company would have access to Criterion's transfer, unless they come up with some sort of a special arrangement. Pro-B |

I know that in the past Criterion have shared some of their DVD transfers (even with a Korean company). But I don't think they have allowed anyone to use a new HD transfer which they financed.
It will be interesting to see how this release turns out. Pro-B |

Sharing the HD transfer is one thing, but what about the material used by Criterion to do their HD transfer ? Couldn't Carlotta have access to this material and thus having about the same final rendering than Criterion ?

I think they have done it with Zazie dans le métro. I own the French Blu-ray and as far as I can remember, there is the Criterion logo at the beginning of the film, so I think it comes from the same master.
