The Master has lost a hell of a lot of momentum. Forget about making back its $40+ million production cost , I dont even know if it will even make back its P&A cost here in the states. It has sunk like a stone in its box office expansion and will end up being Andersons worst performing film ever (not including Hard Eight). The reaction from most people is not encouraging.
I think it may get nominations for Acting (Hoffman and Phoenix) but at this point I would not bet on any other nominations.

I really hope Django Unchained, Cloud Atlas and Skyfall live up to expectations and all get Best Picture nominees. I can dream.

7.9 on IMDBs is pretty good....does the Academy really consider Box Office performance? Because that's pretty sad if it does.

Considering that ROCKY beat out All the President's Men, Taxi Driver, and Network I think that it does.
But I think the Academy does take into consideration the performance of a film both critically and audience reaction-wise. I really thing The Master has lost out on a best Picture nomination this year

What about Gary Ross, the director? Pretty respected individual in certain circles. Don't think he'll have a hope in Hell of getting a Best Director nod, but it certainly proves that there was at least some talent behind HG.

I definitely think that Brave will win the Animated category, and that director will do to Quentin Tarantino, even if Django Unchained is terrible, because the Academy love arrogant douches (just look at James Cameron ). Not sure what best film will be, but can say for certain that The Master will be definitely up there and in the running.

Gary Ross isn't the same sort of name that Spielberg is, War Horse isn't a very good film, but that got an Oscar nom because of him alone.

I think that as of now I will say the following will be nominated for best Picture.
1. Lincoln
2. Django Unchained
3. Anna Karenina
4. Promised Land
5. Hyde Park On HUdson
6. Les Miserables (lately, musicals, if not done right and pander too much have a way of not getting love if they are too precious and not done correctly though)

I really hope the following are great and make the list: Cloud Atlas ( I am probably rooting for this above all others. It looks exciting and impressive and something exciting and impressive hasnt won a best picture oscar in many many years.) , Skyfall and the Hobbit.

there are also a A few films that are as of now under the radar I feel could impress and make the list . Those films are : Flight, This is 40 , Hitchcock (I think this has a better shot right now of a Best picture nomination than The Master does)

I am really hoping that the following do not make the list: Moonrise Kingdom, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Amour, Life of Pi

I personally don't think any films that have been released this year that I have seen are honestly Oscar Worthy> even my favorite films of the year (The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Cabin in the Woods, Looper, 5-yr. Engagement, God Bless America, etc)I wouldn't really honestly believe were Oscar Worthy. In fact the only Oscar worthy film I think I have seen all year is game Change and that was an HBO original film and isn't eligible .

There Will Be Blood had a LOT of momentum for leading Actor front-runners, but, um...this doesn't.
Which pretty well dooms it to a Best Original Screenplay charity-nomination, if there isn't a 8-9 nomination year to be nice to all the NBOR art-indies.

One of these things is not like the other...
(Namely, which one of these actually WILL get a Best Picture nom, in the event of a 5-nom year? Think we've stopped caring about 6-9, by now, it's just there as consolation prizes to the Critics' Circles.)

Actually I have been hearing that Joaquin Phoenix is a pretty likely contender?

that was 1976 when audiences cared about good films, and good films made money.

No, I'll give you that he isn't a name you could bank a film on by marketing it around -- not like, as you said, Spielberg, or Scorsese -- but he does have a certain fan-base, largely based around the hit that was Pleasantville, that allows him to have a certain amount of fame. I don't think that he will ever get a director's nomination for this, but I wouldn't like to stake a lot of money on that - regardless of huge movies made by well-known directors (Django Unchained, Moonrise Kingdom and Lincoln to name a few), HG was a hugely anticipated release (yes, only by a certain demographic, but anticipated nonetheless) and very well reviewed, as well as doing pretty good at the Box Office, so I wouldn't count it out completely.

Besides, Wes Anderson might win the best director's category anyway - I haven't seen it, but I've heard that he's back to his quirky best, and the Academy love a little indie-esque project like that.

It would be great if we can merge this with the other thread.

I don't see the master taking home best picture, or Anderson taking home Director.

Well Moonrise was one of Anderson's weakest films. Would have loved to have seen Royal Tenenbaums of Life Aquatic win best picture in their respective years but this was not nearly as deserving. Beasts was much ado about nothing. And the other two look really precious and kinda boring (and I like Lee and Hanake) to be honest.

But the Oscars have never been about awarding the best film. If you line up your predictions with your opinion on what you think is best you will lose 99% of the time.

Prometheus should win best visual effect, the film may have been mediocre but the visual style of the film was it's saving grace. Avengers' were ordinary, too much like Transformers.

Tommy Lee Jones is getting great reviews for Lincoln.

yeah i'd like to see Prometheus win best visual effects, though of course there is still the hobbit and Life of Pi to come.
