Hah! And some HD DUD ********er on AVS accused me of spreading FUD when I said I wasn't impressed with the sound on Transformers.

I think the corrected DTS version has the spec's grid box lines in red while the other version has them in black? (I have the good one somewhere but it's probably buried under a pile of accumulating Blus by now )

ahh ok, looks like a few discs are having problems, not all of them
How can "some" discs have a problem? That's an authoring issue, not a stamping one. If you discover a defect like that, you trash every broken copy and make new ones - you don't send out known broken copies to stores for sale.

I threw the DVD of Transformers into my bdps300 and noticed something very interesting about my s300.

Through the mulitchannel analogs (decoding in player) the sound was much more dynamic and aww inspiring. WHen I used the coax out, it was flat and weak sounding.

Are the DAC's in the Sony this ish? Is it better to have players decode?

I always though bitsream to receiver was better...but uh uh, no way, no how here. surprised also at how well this DVD upconverted by the s300.

You might have things set up differently for different inputs. The receiver is quite possibly re-digitizing the sound from the analog outs and then re-DAC'ing them, thus the DAC doesn't make a huge difference.

Does TF have DTS or just DD? I ask because a lot of DVD players will not output DTS by default, unless you set them to, over bitstream. I had one that could internally decode DTS into 5.1 analog and could get the same thing you did... DTS through the analogs but only DD through coax until I fixed it.

BT, make sure midnight mode/dynamic range compression is turned off on the receiver. If it's not that, it could just be the difference in output volume.

This is what I've been wondering about too. They clearly know about them before the actual release date, otherwise there wouldn't be both good and bad copies floating around.

My guess is that the problem was discovered internally and was fixed in later runs (hence the different product IDs) but when it became clear that they cannot re-press enough of them to meet the demand, P/DW's CFO balked and forced the release of known defective discs.

(There's probably a performance clause in the alleged contract which requires P/DW to ship a certain number of Transformers in HD in the first week or their $150m is toast, but now I'm really speculating.)

Disgraceful I know, but I wouldn't put it past the company that accepted a bribe to prolong the format war to everybody's detriment.

sheesh

Actually they did not forget it. They mixed it into the mains so it played back without the 10db boost. It was there alright. For those like me who use full range and extended range speakers for front mains and center, all the bass came from there and not the LFE.

My buddy bought is copy by to watch on my system. I did not sense any lack of bass at all. As a matter of fact, the RTA's that monitor my system registered to below 25hz at very high levels in the LFE, and down to the mid to lower 30's in the front mains.

The soundtrack did sound uneven, with alot of compression on some effects, and others with very little or none. It made for some very interesting spatial effects.

I wasn't impressed by the Transformers movie...so I could care less if it's on HD-DuD or that the sound sucks.

I'd rather have the movie Next on Blu-ray

Your buddy probably got the fixed version.

I wonder what is the ratio of the faulty and fixed versions shipped in the first week....

enjoy

thanks for the tip, Sometimes we overlook the most obvious things like:

"Unit is not working?" Is the unit plugged in? LOL

I checked and sure enough my MC in's had the DB's set considerably higher.
No to mention somehow DRC was set to mid, I turned that off...and I went to Auto Direct instead of using the THX Select processing.

After doing that, my results were totally opposite. So I volume matched the inputs (Raised DB's up on MC in's had to go to +9 Db to match Toslink/Coax output) and now they sound pretty close. There is an ever so slight hiss barely audible over MC in's (have to put ear by speaker to hear) and it is completely absent via Digital Coax-Bitstream. Highs seem to have a tiny bit more crispness and mids a scoatch more punchy on digital.

Gotta say, I used spiderman 2 Superbit for my test disc and Holy Cow DTS had never sounded that good to me before. And now that I got everything Dialed in, LPCM is like HOLY F%&* OMFG!1!!

Thanks again!
