Well CDs are much easier to store on one HDD not to mention much cheaper when compared to what it would take for movies. Of course most CDs don't have any copy protection schemes which try to prevent consumers from copying the data.

I honestly doubt this, for various reasons. Many things, yes, but not everything.

There's always an excuse, isn't there? But before iPods no one even thought about music being digital files, and that all changed... so it'll come. Give it time.

And how is it really cheaper? If so, then by a miniscule amount.

we will see... im mean if Camp Nowhere, Adventures in Babysitting, They Live and Heavy Weights and even more less popular titles that are already released on Bd means it really gives hope for a lot of movies

I thought that initially, but it all depends on what companies have the rights to what films. If that's all a smaller company can get, then sure, they will get released before obvious titles. Which is why there's still films that were never released on DVD that were out on VHS. The same thing will most likely happen here (and we've already seen blus of films that were never released on DVD even).

Don't forget, there were thousands of workout DVDs, nature DVDs, and all sorts of things that will probably never see blu. So "everything"? No.

Of course there is always an excuse.

Oh i'm sure it will change with time, that is a given, but that's just it it will take time. At the moment digital copies provided with BDs or streaming, don't come close to Blu-ray quality. Let's take BD for example, the maximum size is 50GB thus worst case you could store approx. 20 1:1 copies on a 1TB drive. I don't know what your definition of miniscule is but right now if you have a large collection, lets say as large as you CD collection, the cost of not only the HDDs but the equipment, as well as redundancy, starts to add up. I'm sure you could compare it to what it was like a decade or so ago when GB drives started to surface. At that time you couldn't store a lot of music digitally without sacrificing quality even further. Once HDDs reach sizes of 10-100s TB then we can talk.

Let's not even start thinking about 4K or 8K ...

I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is. It seems kind of negative to me.

Every time a movie is announced there's someone saying "Wow I never thought I'd see this on Blu-ray". The format isn't what it was a few years ago - anything can be released nowadays.

Of course... and it all changes exponentially, we've seen it happen. Now, what happens when 4K or 8K becomes norm? You think they'll be able to fit that much info onto the same sized disc with minimal compression? The larger the source, the less we will need physical media. Or movies will start getting split in two again, a la laserdisc.

100TB drives already exist. They just aren't sold commercially yet. Like I said, give it a few more years.

I was just watching a streaming movie tonight - John Sayles' Amigo, which is available on Amazon Instant for free, yet doesn't even have a DVD distribution date yet.

If Troll 2 is on blu ray, any movie can be released on blu ray.

I would certainly like to see blu ray versions of everything.

Esp all the movies I currently have on DVD.

I suppose I considered getting HDX versions of some of them as an alternative to up converting the DVD.

Not surprisingly, some of my DVDs aren't available in HD of any form.

Some of my DVDs I don't even think I would upgrade anyway,... because I can tell the DVD gets pretty close to what can be had from the material.

I just remembered I have 2 laserdiscs that never made it to DVD.

I have to say,... I can't believe that everything will go to blu.

Sometimes to bring a movie to a new format you have to arrange rights for the music royalties and if you don't see a large potential group of buyers then why not focus on titles with that large group of buyers.

I have several... Soderbergh's King of the Hill, Tim Burton's Family Dog TV series... Fearless with Jeff Bridges, which was only released pan and scan on DVD (and now thankfully through the Warner program will finally be in OAR on blu)...

I used to think that, but as I've upgraded my internet speeds (and as my "on disc" collection takes up more space) I'm warming up to the idea of streaming.

Too bad the selection on Netflix still pretty much sucks, but I do like Vudu's "pay per view" model as well. Now obviously for the "reference quality" and historic films, like Lawrence of Arabia, nothing but the best will suffice (therefore I will definitely want the blu-ray disc, and even 4K or 8K as soon as it's feasible for me). However there are so many blu-ray discs that are "barebones" - and at that point I'm kinda OK with streaming since not much effort was put into the disc release anyway. Of course if I can buy the barebones blu-ray for $5 that is still much better than paying $1 or $2 a pop for streaming, but there are plenty of instances from now on where an HDX will suffice to me if no blu-ray exists - or will ever exist. Especially in cases where I just want to check out the film one time, but really have no desire to actually "own" it or have it in my collection.

Of course not EVERYTHING will come to blu. But there is actually a surprising amount of stuff coming to blu-ray that never made it to DVD (or that had WOEFULLY inadequate DVD releases). The last couple of years have really been pretty solid for the format. Hopefully it keeps up for a few more good years before streaming/digital completely takes over.

Even though some films will pop up on HD streaming without a blu release, I feel like the best chance LONG TERM for more films to be available with quality HD streams, is for them to first to at least have had a blu-ray.
