I have stopped buying DVDs !! I had bought only around 50 DVDs after getting job, but then BluRay format came into existense.
I can't even bear watching famous TV shows in substandard DVD quality.
I find myself pretty lucky that I have watched lots of famous shows like Lost, Prison Break, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Mad Men etc. in Bluray.

It's only with some content which is still not available in Bluray such as 'The Wire', but I can foresee even if the show was 1.33:1, it will come to Bluray someday like all those academic format old movies have been released to BluRay.

Thanks to God that I came to know about some great movies and shows only when Bluray format became available to the world !!
Bluray is the way to go, no more going back to DVDs... Period !!

Maybe I should clarify I'm using best buys disc to digital service. Don't think that is illegal. So basically I pay a few buck for the DVD then pay 5 to transfer it to hd and then trade it in for 5 at best buy.

I don't know what you're all complaining about, I still watch VHS if what I want to watch isn't on dvd/bd. I'll take the best source of what I want to watch, but I'm not gonna let source determine what I watch.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Walmart's Vudu HD disc-to-digital and Best Buy's Upgrade & Save are what he's referring to. There's nothing illegal in what he's doing.

Best buy is doing disc to digital now too and you can do it from home.

I've got a stack of DVDs I've ordered from Hastings that are eligible. Once I PAY to transfer them to digital that I can watch in hd I trade them in at best buy for the coupon. So basically I'm paying a couple bucks for an hd copy of the film. I only do titles that are not available on blu. So far I've done

Accepted
Before Sunrise/Sunset
8 Seconds
Boiler Room
Boomerang
Tin Cup
What Women Want

Plus a bunch of other DVDs I'm going to do at some point.

It looks like you want to argue and you have no grounds for it. You are suppose to own the DVD when streaming, if he sells them, then he no longer owns it.

You can rent, but only allowed to watch the movie within a time limit.

If that were the case then they wouldn't sell digital copies by themselves. If you're suppose to own a physical copy. I don't want to argue, but you seem so sure about what you're saying, and it sounds made up. I've never heard about having to own the DVD after you pay to convert it to a digital copy.

I can understand if a movie is available on Blu-ray and you only want to watch it on Blu-ray. If someone lends a DVD of a movie that is on Blu-ray, I'll prefer to see the HD version. I get that. We're on Blu-ray.com.

But I don't understand people who won't watch a movie because it is not on Blu-ray. There are a hell of a lot more movies out there that are not on the format comapred to what is available. There are countless films that haven't even seen a DVD release. It's probably wrong, snobby, and shallow on my part, but you'd have to be a pretty casual movie fan in my eyes to refuse to watch a DVD...or even better a VHS tape of a movie you're interested in and won't be able to see otherwise.

An example of myself is that I'm a huge horror fan. Everyone knows that there is a ton of stuff that hasn't seen the light of day on even DVD, let alone Blu-ray. I will happily watch a VHS or even a VHS rip generations old if it's the only way to see that flick. Otherwise, you're just missing out. If you're the type who cares solely about only well known mainstream titles that will always see releases within the first five years of a new format, it's good for you I guess. But I don't have to understand it, especially since it takes a certain kind of person to hop on a forum to post thoughts about movies.

And if you watch an inferior version of the film, you can appreciate it even more on the off chance it does get the magical Blu release.

I'm with you there's nothing in their Terms & Conditions, after you convert your titles to HD or SD it says you get to keep your DVD's, I guess you take them to the store to show you have the physical disc. As you get to keep them, they're your property to do what you want with (sell, trade-in or keep), the VUDU service is designed so customers can put their DVD's in the cloud or convert them to HD and no longer have the need for the physical copy.

How could Walmart even enforce customers to keep their discs? It would be like telling their customers they can't sell their BD's after redeeming a digital copy. Which I'm sure a lot of people have done.

The only DVD I bought in the last 8 years was Crossroads by Walter Hill, with Steve Vai, and that just because I doubt it'll be see a release on Blu-ray anytime soon. I wish that films got a Criterion release!!!

I have to squint when watching a DVD. It's appalling!

Blu-ray is the only way to go for the time being.

I watch 99.9999999999% on Blu-ray. The rest only because it doesn't exist on BD yet.

The 16x9 anamorphic DVDs that are 1.78 or 1.85 I'll sometimes watch, but even those stretch the available resolution to all that it can bear on a large screen.

On the other hand, the pre-widescreen classics in 4x3 that were carefully mastered in HD within the past 5-10 years usually look extremely good on DVD when upscaled at 1080p, since you're getting the maximum available pixels used most efficiently in the smallest area. The best ones actually look better than some of the over-DNR'd Blu-rays out there, but a good Blu-ray properly transferred and authored will still blow those DVDs away.

So, yeah, I often avoid or put off watching movies simply because they're not available on Blu-ray.
What's even worse are non-anamorphic DVDs. It's like looking through a keyhole and I refuse to watch them. I saw White Squall awhile back in that format (before it was released on Blu-ray) and never again. What sucks is that there are at least two movies I WILL watch on DVD simply because I really want to see them (The Deer Hunter and Sophie's Choice) but they're both non-anamorphic. I'm probably gonna have to blind buy The Deer Hunter on Blu-ray but I may never get to view Sophie's Choice.

However, I don't mind watching TV shows on DVD/streaming, although ideally it'd be nice to see them on Blu-ray as well.

Does anyone else have this problem? (I guess you could call it a problem.)

I don't purchase DVD movies anymore either but I will admit that I do still watch movies on a DVD. I just watched Troy last week and IMO, thought it looked great on my TV. Sometimes, if I am in the mood to watch a movie from my DVD collection, I am never displeased with the experience.

While there is no comparison to bluray - unfortunately its the only game in town when it comes to many titles. As a result I watch DVD's quite a bit still - noticable but if the film is good I deal with the upconverted look until a bluray version is released. Plan on watching Robin Hood again this week (1991 Patrick Bergen / Uma Thurman version) which can only be found on DVD.

Oh give me a break. reading these post make me laugh, these are going to be the same people who in a few years will cut out their eyes if they have to watch a blu ray because its not the newest format. and blu ray will all of a sudden be just as horrible as vhs and UNWATCHABLE...Everyone is entitled to thier own opinion but it seems some people need to grow up a little.

The people who can't the difference actually can. They just don't care. Like when they can't tell the difference between a plasma and an LCD.

I really don't like DVD anymore but sometimes have no choice. A lot of the arthouse and indie stuff is impossible to get on bluray at my local video store. and yeah, I will pass on a movie if it's not on bluray.
