By the way, if you can, check out Metal Storm 3D. It's heavily influenced by Mad Max and has very strong 3D. |

I really enjoyed Universal Soldier Regeneration, despite Van Damme's rather unenthusiastic performance it seemed to revitalise the series by being much better than it had any right to be.
![]() Given it had the same director, I expected the sequel to be more of the same but I hated it when I saw it in 2D. It was not what I expected. I only found out that it was actually shot in 3D a year or so later, so that was reason enough to re-watch it. ![]() I still have my issues with the film, but I do appreciate that the intention was not to repeat the same old story and more importantly, the 3D really works for the film, putting the viewer right in the headspace of the protagonist. I would never recommend this film in 2D, but in 3D it's a different experience that I'm looking forward to revisiting. |

For those interested I recommend John Hyams audio commentaries with Dolph Lundgren for the 2 films highly, as well as the making of documentary for DAY OF RECKONING (only on US edition)

That reminds me, the UK release is uncut too. Not sure about the HK release.

Watched the 3D UK version last night. As said it's the uncut (NC-17) version of the movie.
Gosh it's violent! But gosh the movie was shot beautifully! This movie is a really mixed bag. It's like a A grade B movie. It's totally different than the other Universal Soldier movies. Yes, there are action scenes but there's also so much more. Lot's of quiet scenes. The 3D was satisfying. It was shot in 3D and it shows. The lightning was very good (even that I have to warn about the long flickering strobo effects! Epilepsy warning!) and it's shot very, very professionally. No pop outs; just a couple of quick sparks that hit the face. I wish I could see more 3D movies shot like this one! |

Just watched this and thought it was a pretty bad movie barring some good to great fighting and choreography. Maybe part of it was I didn't know what was going on the entire movie (could very well have been my head-space though).
There seemed to be a lot of weird looking 3d especially when it came to any on-screen light sources. I did notice a few scenes where the 3d really caught me off-guard where it was excellent, but the rest didn't add anything for me(ie very mild or disorientating). Reading everyone else's mostly very positive reviews- I will leave this here as a reminder to my future self to watch this again some day and give it another chance. |

Have just bought a copy of the UK release for the 3D. Never seen any of the other US films. To what extent can this be enjoyed/followed as a stand-alone film or does it require knowledge of the previous entries to make sense?

It works OK but to enjoy it fully you should really treat it as the 3rd in a trilogy, Universal Soldier, Universal Soldier Regeneration and Universal Soldier Day of Reckoning. There were other movies in between the 1st movie and Regeneration but they are terrible and Regeneration pretty much ignores them.
The first movie is decent, Regeneration is (surprisingly) excellent. |

So only version I can find that is not the standalone of this for $40+ is the Netherlands 3 pack that includes Immortals and Drive Angry. This is not listed as uncut but is 114 minutes long, same as uncut and also US 2D version.
Can anyone confirm this Netherlands version is uncut? Thank you in advance! |

I cannot confirm as I don't own it, and it's academic now given you have already ordered the HK release, but the Dutch 16-rated cut is meant to be the uncut version. I checked ofdb.de, which is a German-language site that is quite helpful for working out whether or not a given release is cut or not.
I generally expect Dutch releases to be uncut. It's worth bearing in mind that the Dutch sensors are far more lax than, say, the German sensors. Whilst there is in fact a Dutch 18 rating, this is essentially reserved for hardcore pornography (I wasn't aware it even existed until a few moments ago as I am not aware of any film with that rating). If you can think of the most violent mainstream film you've seen and check the Dutch rating, it will likely be a 16. Martyrs, for example, is a 16 in the Netherlands, so that gives you an idea of what the threshold for an 18-rated film might be. Also, the German FSK 18 release of this film is NOT uncut; it is heavily butchered. There is an uncut release of the film in Germany but it's what's called "indiziert" ('indexed'). Films placed on the index can only be sold in 'adults only' shops and cannot, for example, be on display in a section of a shop that minors can access. It's also not permitted to advertise films placed on the index. |

The UK 3D Blu Ray is uncut (I have the steelbook). Apparently, the 3D version is supposed to be the theatrical version and the 2D version is unrated. This is inaccurate. Having checked the runtimes of both versions and checking the 3D version for the unrated scenes of violence, I can confirm that both cuts on the UK disc are unrated (rated 18 in the UK, of course).
The disc is region locked, however. That aside, it's a great little action film, highly recommended. The 3D isn't the pop out variety, but the depth on display is certainly effective, especially in the car chase scene. |
