my fatty died from lack of thermal paste. i was astounded on the lack of thermal paste when i opened my case.

lack of thermal paste is the major culprate here. once the board melts and loses connection to the processor you will see a YLOD, its a matter of days away

Doesn't Game Stop pay $90 for a busted PS3? Would take a huge chunk out of buying a new slim.

I'll get the games (because he's not into those types of games) and he can get him a brand new Ps3 this time.

It's only $279 and change, so....I told him I know I'd be freaking the hell out if that happened to me, so...I wanted to do him a solid.

The national nightmare is almost over. lol
did u consider the classic white bundle for #299? 500gb HDD, a yr of playstation plus for free, and 12 free games

I can vouch for ps3repairshop. My old fat PS3 got the YLOD, and I used them to reball the system. Works great now Though I use a new slim for my daily use.

Well I didn't see that one, but even if I had, I wouldn't have gotten it.

He shares my account and so I have playstation plus already, and those games are already in my account.

I got the $279 Amazon Family Bundle or whatever it's called. Comes with a bluray remote, dualshock controller, Ratchet + Clank Collection, Playstation Battle All-Stars and $20 in Amazon Instant Video credit (although I don't know where that is).

It's the new slim model.

If an actual reball might only last 6 months, that'll definitely rule out that option.
I honestly couldn't tell you because I bought the extended warranty with FS and they took care of the fixing. If memory serves me right they actually changed the whole board. (What was written on the paper)

Now between what was written and what was done I have no idea.

So they are legit in fixing the problem? Is your reballed system still going strong? My 60gb just ylod so thinking about getting it reballed by ps3repairshop.com but didn't know if they were reputable....

I had YLOD and took it to a local guy for $30. It worked for about 5 hours, then I took it back and he reflowed it again for free. I play about an hour every now and then out of fear, and am tempted to run it into full over-heat mode and send it to PS3repair or some kind of reputable website if there is any?

I LOVE my 80gb PS3, and fortunately it's just my bedroom one and I have a 120gb slim in the main TV room. But I still like playing PS3 in bed and it's gotten annoying that I start to worry about overheating. I don't know if I should trust one of those websites though. And I definitely don't want to buy another PS3, because I'm going to buy a PS4 in the fall.

I went to Sudburymods a couple of years ago for my 60GB. My PS3 was getting the yellow light every couple of months. I had been using a heat gun to re-flow it each time, but I was getting tired of having to open my PS3 all the time. So, following the suggestion of another user here, I ordered a fan mod from the site I linked. Ever since I installed the fan mod, I've only had my PS3 break down on me once. And it's been about two years of having the fan mod installed. If you order the kit for the fan mod, whoever fixed your PS3 the first time, could probably install the kit for you. The fan mod allows you to control the fan speed. That way, if you set it at a high speed, the PS3 never has a chance to heat up. Or, if you'd like, you can send your PS3 to Sudburymods and they will completely re-do all the solder on the CPU and GPU with better material. The reballing of the solder also includes the fan mod.

I can speak from personal experience and say that they are reliable. There is at least one other user here that has used them before as well. Best of luck to you.

I used the method in my thread and it did the trick for a few times and I eventually got another PS3. Either way, you'll want to save money to buy another PS3 or keep saving for the PS4 which i'm purely speculating to be around $400.

If I still had my other PS3, I would try out this fan mod after 'fixing' the YLOD. From what I've researched is the main culprit of the YLOD is the overheating. If this fan can prevent it, then sounds like a good investment. If you use it, please let us know if it works out for you.

Default ps3repairshop.com

anyone else has any experience with ps3repairshop.com? I need to reball my 60gb ps3 and maybe replace the power supply to a more efficient less heat producing one. Any recommendations?

YLOD happened to me 2 times when I had to the phat version, but the EU law forces companies to give customers at least 2 year warranty on electronic products, so they repaired it for me 2 times (the second time it happened, was 1 week before my warranty expired, so I was lucky ).

That was 2 - 2.5 years ago though. I have the slim version now and I believe YLOD does not occur on this PS3.

And my warranty on my current PS3 will expire within a few months, so that's just in time for the new PS4 .

All this talk about the YLOD made me say a silent prayer for mine. I also have the fattie and just want it to last to the PS4 release, don't think I'd have the patience to wait it out if mine died on me now.
