Got it yesterday and watched it tonight after coming home from filming at a festival. Wonderful all those details and correct colours (I'm looking at you US DVD!)
Awesome bonus feature with a 30-min docu of visiting Stockholm and Visby in Sweden to find the locations that inspired the film. As a Swede I felt just like home, just like every time I watch the movie. And it was great to see a friend of mine doing some marching during the Main Guard segment in the docu. At least I think it was him, otherwise he has a twin brother I don't know about! xD |

Would be great if they fixed up the audio and did a recall. Not sure how likely that is... Have they done anything similar in the past?

Does the Blu-ray have English "dubtitles" (translated from English dub dialogs) or true English subtitles (translated from Japanese dialogs)?
According to DVDBeaver, all past DVD editions have dubtitles only. In the scene where Kiki takes her first flight, if you see subtitles like these on the Blu-ray, then they are dubtitles. In the Japanese dialog, the dad is saying, "It doesn't sound like she crashed into anything." (That was why a moment before he was holding his hands near his ears, trying to listen.) Also, when Kiki is about to fly for the first time, she slaps her broom. Is the audio of her slap IN SYNC with her slapping the broom?? On the old 2003 Region-1 Disney DVD, they were not in sync. But on the 2001 Region-3 Hong Kong-made DVD, they were. And it should look and sound like this: Regarding the audio pitch issue, since Studio Canal made a PAL DVD for this film that had 4% speedup, could this Studio Canal Blu-ray have inherited the sped-up version of the dialog track? |

The Kiki subs are subtitles, not dubtitles. The subs only match the Japanese track.
As of past DVDs, the US Disney DVD had both subtitles and dubtitles for the hearing impaired. I sampled the English dub track a little, and it is quite different from the old DVD dub, as in they changed the music, edited out some incidental dialogue that was unnecessary, etc. I don't think PAL speedup has anything to do with it. The old UK Optimum DVD (also included in the BD set) has an NTSC to PAL transfer, so the audio should sound how it naturally should. |

Also, on the Studio Canal discs, does the audio of Kiki slapping the broom in sync with the picture? |

The blu ray has only one subtitle track, the other just translates signs. I am unfamiliar with the Disney disc however I can confirm the blu ray subtitles are mostly different to the dub and therefore are either the streamline dubtitle or is accurate Japanese. My basic grasp of Japanese suggests the subtitles are accurate however the spellings are American suggesting it may be dubtitles however it would seem the Streamline dub was very accurate anyway. I believe they are the streamline subtitles. But I'm not certain, I would need to compare more subtitles to be certain. Here is an extract to compare if the subtitles are the same. Kiki meets fortune teller witch. Kiki: Good evening! Witch: it was. Newcomer, I suppose. Kiki: I must be. I just left home tonight. Witch: Would you mind turning off that music? I prefer to fly without accompaniment. Kiki: is it really hard to get settled into a place you've never been? Witch: oh, yes. Lots can go wrong. But since I'm good at fortune-telling, I can handle anything. Kiki: fortunes? Witch: in fact, I've started telling fortunes about love lately. Hope this helps compare if they are the same subtitles as on the Disney disc. Last edited by Andy2992; 09-22-2013 at 04:14 AM. |
