I haven't bought any of those grails, they are just too expensive for me.
And I could never justify spending that much for a steelbok.

I bought them all on release day for $30/piece max, I was being sarcastic, they were wise decisions.

Okay, but I don't get how buying very rare steelbook is a fail though.

Its an automatic fail if the steelbook has Green in the title.

Or if the film is terrible of course.

Felt a bit guilty about paying more than I had previously paid for any film for the Thor steelbook...until it arrived

Because it's the wrong reason to buy!

Buy the steelbook if you like the film or haven't seen it but know you probably will. You are stating your intentions as "I'm going to buy any steelbook that will be rare just because it will be rare." Buy for the content, not the case. Make the case an incentive to show extra appreciation for the FILMS you love.

Hence all of the FAIL comments.

I quite agree - but I think quite a lot of people here dont!

Its either that or terrible taste in films anyway

Maybe I should have clarified better; I don't buy even rare steelbooks if the movie doesn't interest me at all. Like Wreck it-Ralph steelbook by BluFans. What I meant was that if some steelbook is probably going to be rare because of the low release number or some special content but if I haven't seen the movie I might blind buy it if it seems interesting.
As I already said in my other post in this thread: I will rather buy that rare steelbook now and sell it later if I didn't like the movie than not buy it and later regret it when it's OOS if I liked the movie after all.

And btw, there is no wrong or right reasons to buy stuff, different collector's have different reasons and ways to collect things. If someone likes to buy only rare items, there's nothing wrong with that.

I'll never see the attraction for the Thor steelbook. It's a great one, very classy and I have it but I see the silly prices people spend on it and it's nuts. The embossing is great and the picture chosen is perfect but the way it's placed just always seemed off to me - like a cut-out thin glossy picture just glued to the front of a plain black steelbook. And the back picture is alright but a bit too fake-looking.

As I say, a great steelbook overall (despite my nitpckings!) but I see people placing it on such a pedestal and declaring it to be their favourite and I just don't see it. Personally I thought the Captain America one was better.

Off-topic I know, I apologise

On-topic, I do still feel guilty about getting the Star Wars steelbooks, simply because they came out in a two-week period where I was already spending a solid amount on blu-rays (thanks Jurassic Park 3D, Hobbit and the Disney BOGOF) but I assumed they'd sell out if I left it too long and I really liked them. Happy with them, it's just spending £60 on any two blu-rays this month. I really hope they go OOP soon to help me justify it

Don't need to apologise, we all have our own views. I do love the case and do think it's the nicest looking steelbook I have. It also helps that it's one of only a few superhero type films that I actually really like. I personally don't see why the Iron Man steelbooks go for such insane prices for example.

I do love the back picture too

Funny you mention Captain America because the steelbook does look very nice but I thought it was an awful awful film and don't buy anything I don't like

As I've said in other topics before, I only buy films I like and want to watch so getting Thor wasn't about collecting it to sell or keeping it sealed on a shelf. I'm just happy to have it cause I love the film and the steelbook itself

That's fair enough. As I say, it's a really nice steelbook, definitely one of the good ones and I'm glad you managed to get hold of a copy and appreciate it so much.

Default I only have a few, and all for movies I like

On BD, I have;

first four Resident Evils
Ghost Rider: SoV
Avengers
Sherlock Holmes: GoS
Pirates of the Caribbean: OST

on DVD:

Dune
Dog Soldiers

I have seen plenty of ones that would be cool to own, but the price is more than I would want to spend most of the time.

I recently bought #25 - Life of Pi 3d - and it was a fairly hefty price, 10 dollars more than my previous highest (Saving Private Ryan play.com exclusive). Then i see close encounters and those awesome universal onees for june 25 and rather than guilt, i just pre order those as well

I'm not going to go too far out of my way to get a steelbook. I'll pay a few dollars more if Best Buy or Target is selling a steelbook version of a movie.

I only recent sprung for Equilibrium and Pan's Labyrinth steelbooks from Canada because they were pretty good deals and two of my favorite movies.

I have really slowed down the Blu-Ray buying and such of late. The plan is to move to a much bigger house next year and I will finally get to build my home theater. Thinking I will still pick up a Blu here or there (and the occassional steel) but for right now...got to get other things.

Requiem For A Dream. I would have preferred no inner artwork vs. the excuse for artwork that was printed. Chilling out for a while.
