Personally, I REALLY wanted to like this movie. I loved Katherine in the Ginger Snaps movies and even her small role in Freddy vs Jason. But I found this movie to just be boring. Not bad in any way. Just uninteresting. I actually fell asleep and rewatched it the next day and almost fell asleep again. Oh well.

This is a great little movie, though it's more of a hybrid sleazy thriller than a real horror movie. The first two acts are superb, though the third act is less coherent. More of a setup for what transpires at the end would have made this an almost perfect movie. I would still consider it highly watchable, especially for anyone that likes Katherine Isabelle. She really steals the show as Mary.

I am with you on this. She was amazing.. the script and sketchy directing however made the movie a bit weak.

The reason I'm so adamant on this, is that I've only watched about an hour of the film and it constantly feels like its a made for TV movie. Like there are parts that are intentionally cut out. The flow of the editing is wrong.

Anyone else feel like this or is it just me?

*edit 6/22* That ending fell flat as a board.

Assuming you are asking whether a purchase is worth it or not... I'd say for $17.99 or less that's an absolute yes. Here was my write-up after the first time I watched the film from the "Recommend a Modern Indie horror film" thread.

Back in 2013 the movie bug hit me hard. I had/have always loved horror movies and the HD DVD/Blu Ray formats in 2006 and beyond stirred in me a new found love of all forms of cinema. Jump to 2013 and my awareness of indie horror really began to bloom. What started as a simple curiosity soon bloomed into a full born passion thanks to an exposure to a number of films through a variety of resources. One after another I came across fantastic film after fantastic film and my passion for indie horror continued to grow until in 2015 it was shared via this thread.

I consider the films I watched in 2013 and early 2014 "Wave One" of my indie horror exposure. These are the films that had the biggest impact and/or were the ones I looked forward to and thought about the most before, after, and since. This first wave of titles included...

-Grave Encounters
-Grave Encounters 2
-Absentia
-All Cheerleaders Die
-Deadgirl
-Digging up the Marrow
-All Hallows Eve
-Hatchet I-III
-Here Comes the Devil
-The Houses October Built
-Jessebelle
-Mr. Jones
-Pontypool
-The Possession of Michael King
-The Sacrament
-A Serbian Film
-The Taking of Deborah Logan
-The Tunnel
-Under the Bed
-VHS
-VHS 2

Most of these I've spoke about at length in this thread and most I've given top recommendations on. There has however been one film that I was exposed to during this initial time years ago that I never managed to pick up or view... that is until tonight. This film has forever been ingrained in my head as the missing piece of a puzzle that was started over 5 years ago and I had convinced myself that it would be just as great as all the films I had lumped it in with so many years ago. That film was...

American Mary (2012)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXqHADm_cZQ

From the moment this film started until the final credits rolled I was completely captivated. For years I had convinced myself that this film would be another outstanding indie the way that so many others had been before it and amazingly even with such high expectations it came through for me.

American Mary starts with a simple concept seen countless times before, but quickly separates itself into something unique and very much it's own. This film has a depth about it that defies its simple origins and elevates it beyond so many of it's genre brethren. Katharine Isabelle is simply stunning in her role as Mary and brings an unprecedented level of authenticity to the role that quite simply is missing from all but the very best the genre has to offer.

Smart, sophisticated, and both darkly humorous and twisted this is in many ways a spiritual successor to American Psycho and puts to shame the abomination of a film that currently carries the American Psycho 2 label.

Despite the picture above, I actually had tonights viewing on the Region Free UK edition of the film from Universal Pictures. The original XLRator release is long out of print and it's replacement is a mod BD-R. The Universal disc looks and sounds fantastic with nary a blemish to be seen/heard and can be found for right around $10 on both Amazon and ebay. (I picked it up from seller Rarewaves on ebay just 2 weeks ago.)

American Mary closes the chapter on a book that was started so long ago. It carries a very special significance to me and a sense of nostalgia despite it being essentially brand new for me. However even without the nostalgia like enthusiasm this is an all around excellent indie film and easily one of the best I've recommended. If you like films like Hostel, American Psycho, Would You Rather, or even to some extent the I Spit on your Grave style of films, then you will likely enjoy this. Highly Recommended.

Heads up- when purchasing through Amazon, this is a BD-r that says “manufactured by Amazon” on the cover.

Yeah, don't buy the $18 BD-R, buy the $10 official release.
