For some reason, Hollywood is still trying to figure out how to attach a money wagon to that dream (they tried the "Same day PPV" stunt once, and would've tried it twice if "Tower Heist" hadn't been bitten in the rear for it), and The Dream Will Never Die.

Right now, the current incarnation for most studios is "Pre-order the Blu-ray BEFORE you see the movie!" (as bragging-rights hype, to announce how much marketing the movie will have, just like a really big one!), but still doesn't quite wash away the ghosts of Monsters Inc. 3D...
Everyone blamed 3D for that one, but sooner or later a regular movie's going to pay the price for it, and they'll run out of scapegoats: Unfortunately, "Waiting to rent it" is also a phrase that's been around since the days of VCR, and it's not one you want the audience to keep in mind when you're charging ten bucks + glasses.
Good points, EricJ. Sounds like this older plan of releasing a film on same day for video and in theaters isn't the best idea. It gives those who wanted to see in theaters a reason not to, and instead just buy it if it's something they're a fan of.
Jurassic Park 3D came close to this idea, releasing the movie in theaters, and less than a month later, on blu ray 3D.

That's true. In the store, pre orders are already available for many in theater movies.

Saw Epic 3D in the theatre last Wednesday. The scope and beauty of this animated feature makes Blue Sky's past efforts like Ice Age 3 and 4 (movies that are awesome in their own right btw) look like amateur efforts by comparison. The variety of stunning locations and sheer amount of animation going on at once is staggering. This easily has to be one of the most technically impressive animation films I've ever seen. I really enjoyed the story too. Blue Sky is an animation studio to be reckoned with.

I went to see this last week. It turned out to be quite good. When it first started it seemed a little corny, and I thought the characters had an odd look I didn't really care for. But as the story progressed it started to draw me in, and I ended up enjoying it a lot. And it had a lot of fun action. And of course, it had Blue Sky's usual top notch 3D. On a level with DreamWorks.

Home Media Magazine calling Epic a $300 Millon animated Hit!

A hit in my book too and glad the movie is being released in August, when I'll be looking for some good 3D entertainment!

Preordered last week for $24.99, hard to pass up for that price. Now if only Iron Man 3 would drop to that price.

Nice mini review Lovemy3D. Thanks. I was considering this one in theaters, but never got the time back then. Glad to hear it was better than expected.

24.99 is a good deal for a new blu 3D. I think Iron Man 3 3D will drop to 24.99 to 27.99 by release week.

Same here. I wish DREAMWORKS 3d also starts at this price point, like Croods and turbo which are at $35

Nice. Thanks for the news. I'll keep this one in mind. Cool Avatar; Darth Maul rules (thanks to Ray Park).

HMMM not even on the radar for release here in New Zealand yet....is the release region free????

I do have a slight concern though...I see that the release comes with a "seed card" that may cause issues going through customs here....might be better to wait it out.

This is my most anticipated 3D Blu-ray release. I saw Epic in 3D at the movies and thought it was amazing. I can't wait to see this bad boy at home!!!

Yes, it's region free. It does say A on the back cover but I've tested the disc's myself.
