Yeah, you are right. Theaters made no money off of churchgoers wanting to see that movie about Jesus. How silly of me. I bet they didn't even make a single dollar on Sunday matinees.

Your opinion, not fact is to have them "make a mint off of church group outings". Tolling debunked.
Passion was a different beast though. It had such overwhelming buzz that everyone felt they had to see it or they'd be left out of the loop. I even saw it theatrically and I'm an Atheist. I didn't like the movie, but I saw it.

Nobody outside of church groups would see a re-cut version of the Bible miniseries.

The church groups were bussing parishioners in (or distributing free tickets from bulk-bought sales), TELLING them it was their "duty" to stock BO numbers to "send Hollywood a message".
Sort of like they do on the IMDB user reviews, a week before the movie comes out. The line between Passionista and opening-weekend-pilgrimage cult-director fanboy warrior is dangerously thin.

Never said they didn't. Your assumption was the majority of people who paid to view that particular movie belonged to church groups. See: MikeScott's post about him being an atheist and still going to see that movie. I'm sure there were many many more people who aren't overly religious or "church nuts" who also saw it. I knew quite a few.

And MikeScott, my post was strictly about Gibson's movie. "is" should have been "was" in my last paragraph. However, you do have a point. Idk what the ratings were for the t.v. series were but obviously the hype didn't get to Passion levels.

And I'm sure GLAAD will bus people to go see GBF.

The ratings for the mini-series were HUGE. And sales for the DVD and Blu-ray are as well.

Umm, no . Only church and sports groups do stuff like this. Not to mention G.B.F. has nothing to do with this :P.

Sports groups have nothing to do with this either.

But if you think that way, then you must have been affiliated with that brainwashed youthful (and hilarious) Takeover Wallstreet movement.....or part of a union, where they drug you to erase your memory before putting you on a bus to protest events which are outside of your state.

At least this is a fun derailment and not the path I expected this to go down.....so far.

Conversely, there are things on the BD that weren't shown on television (an entirely new opening sequence comprised of historical figures referencing the Bible, more graphic violence, longer lingering on Hagar and Bathsheba when they're undressed, a scene with Caiaphas and Malchus that gives closure to their thread, and lots of miscellaneous lines and shots scattered throughout).

Then, on top of all that, the promos showed a scene where (ghost?) Samuel tells Saul David will be king, another scene of Jesus exorcising the demoniac in the synagogue, and the "Mary, Did You Know?" music video had a scene where Mary asks Peter where Jesus has been taken. Plus, in the bonus material, there's B-roll footage of Jesus casting out the demons from Mary Magdalene as she's ranting and raving through the streets. I noticed some film footage of Satan roaming through a marketplace during one of the featurettes which I may believe may be from this scene, too.
Thanks...I have both the Blu-Ray and HD captures of the episodes as they aired. Trying to figure out whether it's worth the space to keep to shows, worth the time to author my own BRs, or just be happy with the commercial set and delete my caps.

Well, it's, (ahem), nice to see ONE big-budget Biblical epic that didn't mistakenly think Magdalene was the "Cast the first stone" adulterer-slash-prostitute...

(Probably because this was largely a fundie Protestant production, at its base. The Catholics, like Martin Scorsese, and Anglicans, like Andrew Lloyd Webber, are usually the ones who grew up thinking Maggie was a hooker.)

Producer Mark Burnett confirmed that they're moving forward with a follow-up miniseries. Although this thread is for the theatrical version coming, I'm mentioning this article here because it makes a passing reference to that cut. Apparently, the final edit for the Jesus film clocks in at two hours and 13 minutes. Considering the Jesus portion of the miniseries runs roughly three hours without credits and bumpers, I guess this means we won't be getting any additional scenes known to have been shot. The four Jesus episodes of the miniseries move along at a spritely pace, so the only way I can see the 133-minute running time working is it they cut out the Nativity completely and start the film with Jesus' baptism like the Gospels of Mark and John so.

They should just shoot a new movie with a bigger budget, better cast, and overall higher production values. There's clearly a market demand for it and they could make some good money -- spend about $40 million, collect underpants, profit.

I'd pay to see Michael Bay direct the Biblical version of Armageddon.

Variety confirms that the film, now called Son of God and runs two hours and 15 minutes and will be distributed by Fox. It also confirms that it's a complete re-edit that will feature additional scenes, so even scenes that showed up in the miniseries may use different takes. I'm still concerned about the short running time (especially now that we know more scenes are being added), but I'll give this a watch regardless. It mentions a 2014 release date, so I'll bet we'll see this in time for Easter.

First of all, did this thread have to turn political and why was Occupy Wall Street brought into it?

Second, The Passion of the Christ was a hit because people wanted to see Jesus get the shit beaten out of him for two hours. Religion (and non-religion) has many languages, violence in the movies has one universal language.

And third, I never got the appeal of this miniseries (it was basically poorly acted camp designed to appeal to old Southerners) and I expect a film version edited from episodes of the series to do as well as The Passion Recut or that totally unnecessary sequel to The Ultimate Gift that flopped last week.

No, no, just the Catholics did.
(The Fundies just wanted to see the "Produced by" credit.)

The first Passion became a hit because the media "controversy" headlines browbeat poor, normal gullible middle-class folk into feeling they should KNOW what their co-workers would be talking about at the watercooler. (Or at the Oscars, next year!)

Recut proved you couldn't fool 'em twice. 0-3 at the Oscars didn't help the peer-pressure much either.
Not to mention, Blu-ray pretty much turned Passion Recut into the Monsters Inc. 3D of inspirational films.
