I'm sorry but I'm 22 and thought this series is probably the best British drama series I've seen. They're often overly try-hard and this was a breath of fresh air. I admit it's weird seeing literally every Northern Irish actor from Hollyoaks doing something serious with their careers but Gillian Anderson was great, as was the killer. It's interesting doing the serious from both points of view, really sets it apart from the usual BBC affair. Looking forward to the second series. This is a step towards what Greg Dyke called for once on the culture show - learning from US television, particularly HBO, and making focused, engaging cinematic television.

In the five part drama series made and set in Northern Ireland, Gillian Anderson stars as Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson who is brought in from the London Metropolitan Police to help catch the killer when a murder in Belfast remains unsolved.



As Gibson travels across from London, we are introduced to the murderer himself; Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan). The drama follows the police investigation uncovering the intricate story of the lives entangled by a series of murders both within the killers’ and the victims’ families.



BBC NI’s Director Peter Johnston says; The Fall is an important project for BBC Northern Ireland. It has involved significant financial investment and will showcase the skills, talent and expertise of our local creative sector. We are delighted to have been able to create a drama series of this scale and ambition and know that it will provide audiences with some gripping and memorable television. The Fall features writing and performances of the highest quality and reflects the BBC’s commitment to increasing the volume, impact and benefits of network programme production in Northern Ireland.





The Fall ,written by Allan Cubitt (The Runaway, Murphy’s Law, Prime Suspect) and executive produced by BBC NI’s Head of Drama, Stephen Wright was filmed in and around Belfast from March to June 2012.




Allan Cubitt says: Setting The Fall in Belfast and the surrounding area was an easy choice for me. I've always found Northern Ireland a fascinating place, culturally and geographically, and I already had a great working relationship with Stephen Wright and BBC NI. Having the city as a backdrop - hopefully almost a character in itself - also allowed me to draw on the disproportionate amount of home-grown acting talent there is. I really hope that seeing those actors - some relatively new to the screen - working alongside someone as iconic and potent as Gillian Anderson will make for compelling viewing.

Can anyone comment on picture quality? There doesn't appear to be a US blu coming, so is this worth the import?

That's the plan, although apparently GA's schedule is so hectic we might have quite a long wait.

As for picture quality. It's fine if not outstanding. It's been extensively graded (bleached green look from what I remember) and appears to have been shot on digital. Certainly a lot better than a DVD though.

American friends who've caught the show are raving about it.

Last episode was brilliant and I'm so glad it didn't slip into the usual cliche it was heading towards and thankfully pulled back. Some great performances and writing though the 'cliffhanger' was a bit naff.

Acorn's interesting release choices continue this year.

A boxed set of Series 1-2 (2013-2014) will finally be released on 12 September 2016, having already seen two DVD iterations in 2014 and February 2016:



Then Series Three (2016) will finally follow in December this year, along with the usual and customary Series 1-3 (2013-2016) boxed set on the same day:



Please dig deep and pre-order, as we barely get any UK releases from Acorn Media UK anymore (I think Series Three of The Fall will be their first/only new 2016 Blu-ray release), especially compared to their counterpart in the States.

In other news, apparently, the third series of The Fall will be the final series. I'll be sad to see Stella go, but I know I'll love watching her leave...
