I'm going to go out on limb and say the studio hopes to increase sales.

But if you like a movie and planned on buying it anyway, how is this going to increase sales?

Again, I'm no studio head, but it would seem to me that the earlier you announce something, the more time people will have to get it.

Maybe you're right, but I can't imagine this increases sales more than a special announcement made in say, a month. Unless you are REALLY paying attention to Blu-Ray news things, and how many Joe Blow's really are, who is even going to notice the announcement now? I'd think the theatrical release is what would get the medias attention.

Who cares? It isn't bothering anything. All it is doing is increasing awareness. It isn't a big deal in the slightest

I don't profess to know all the numbers involved...but how is this hurting you btw? Short of just 'change in the norm'?

I didn't say it was a "big deal", I think it is ridiculous though and unnecessary. I'm not losing sleep over it, just commenting on it, like others have as well. You're free to disagree with my opinion.

Why is it "ridiculous and unnecessary"?

I never claimed it did. I just happen to find it unnecessary and a diversion from the way things have been done for decades.

Because when a film is released to theaters, that is "theater time" and I'm all for the film getting the attention at that time. Then after it goes off, THEN announce it for home video. It is just my opinion, no reason for you to try to turn this into one of the long and drawn out wars you so often ignite. We disagree is all, lets move on.

Well I, for one, am very glad to hear about this "special packaging". I hope it's a Reel Heroes steelbook!

Now, if they choose to offer ticket discounts, free tickets, or a special early release on Blu-Ray, that would be different, but this just seems like a way to get people to pre-order something unnecessarily. The entire "pre-order" stuff started with video games and now it is everywhere, grrrrrr. Next thing you know companies will want to you pre-order your washing machine or refrigerator.
Did you even read my post in this thread? I'm sure I'm not the only one with that type of situation.

You're welcome to have your opinion, just as I am, but I don't see how this makes "future planning" easier. Why the "gang" mentality here at Blu-ray.com recently? This place is getting like AVSforum with all the pouncing on people for simply having an opinion that might be different.

Lets put it another way, my opinion on the early pre-orders differs than you guys, I accept that. I also accept and appreciate your thoughts and opinions as to why you like them. So, we disagree, it happens, no reason to further discuss this.

Yeah, personally, I can't see any downside to these early preorders, especially for the customer. Heck the only downside I can think of, would be possibly hurting box office sales...but hey, that's a studio problem, not a me problem.
Give me as much info as early as possible. For a consumer that's never a bad thing.

I see your point, really, I do, but it's just too early for me. Maybe it's because I have lived through the entirety of home video and just got used to it being done a certain way for over 30 years. I'm a traditionalist I suppose, but I just prefer to have the movie shown, THEN hear about the home video release.

$20.99 is a good release date price regardless so put an order in and cancel later if the packaging blows

I'll pre-order it, even though I'm not too thrilled with Amazon's $3.99 shipping price.
