I'm trying to come up with mine, but I'm so glad you placed Jezebel so high up on yours. I really love that film and don't think it gets as much credit as it deserves.

I should add that it is with the utmost regret that the 1933 version of Alice in Wonderland just missed my list. It's a marvelously demented film, and, if you have young children whom you want to irrevocably traumatize, then you should put this film on your priority list at your earliest convenience.
There are simply too many great films in this decade to limit the number to 20. The 1930s really expanded the possibilities of cinema in a way that no other decade has matched. |

Nuts, the 1930s are my weak spot.
Oh well, at least I have until July 20 to cram in some film-study sessions. Too bad the decade isn't represented well on blu-ray, I hate to spoil a good movie by watching it on my terrible streaming services, (my computer is a dinosaur, ![]() |

1.) Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
2.) The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) 3.) The Wizard of Oz (1939) 4.) Gone with the Wind (1939) 5.) Grand Hotel (1932) 6.) Modern Times (1936) 7.) Stage Door (1937) 7.) Vivacious Lady (1938) 8.) Swing Time (1936) 9.) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) 10.) My Man Godfrey (1936) 11.) It happened One Night (1934) 12.) Topper (1937) 13.) The Thin Man (1934) 14.) Gunga Din (1939) 15.) Dark Victory (1939) 16.) Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) 17.) Holiday (1938) 18.) Only Angels Have Wings (1939) 19.) M (1931) 20.) The Prisoner of Zenda (1937) Holy cow. I'm pretty sure I could fill this list from 1939 alone, but here is a selection of my loosely ranked favorites, attempting not to swamp any one genre. I also assume "30s" is 1930-39, rather than the mathematically correct 1931-1940. (1940 was another amazing year for Hollywood.) |
