Default Short Term 12 (Brie Larson)

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/short_term_12_2013/

It looks typically indie but I don't have a problem with that. I love character studies. I think Brie Larson (United States of Tara, 21 Jump Street, Rampart) is great and she seems great in this.

Short Term 12
Director-writer: Destin Cretton
Cast: Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr., Kaitlyn Dever
Distributor: Cinedigm

This year’s big winner of the Grand Jury Narrative Feature and Narrative Audience Awards at the SXSW Film Festival, Short Term 12 won the other big prize — a distribution deal following the spring festival. It centers on a 20-something supervising staff member of a foster care facility, dealing with personal demons as she decides how to continue her relationship with her co-worker/boyfriend. “It’s an artistic achievement and it’s emotionally satisfying,” offered Cinedigm’s Vincent Scordino, VP of Theatrical Acquisitions. “Critics and audiences have responded to it. [The film] plays really well everywhere we’ve taken it. Brie [Larson] has received great reviews for her role. She’s front and center and is an extraordinary performer.” Cinedigm took the film to the recent Locarno Film Festival where Larson picked up an acting award. Noted writer/director Destin Cretton: “The best thing that allows for performance is to not have to spend too much time setting up scenes…Brie [Larson] and John [Gallagher] saw something in those characters they could identify with and threw themselves into them.”

Back Stateside, the distributor has presented word-of-mouth screenings including one hosted by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams. It also played at the Hamptons International Film Festival’s summer screening series. “If you look at this film you think 18 – 40 but it also plays well to people who are older,” said Scordino. “Destin [Cretton] is a huge talent and definitely someone to get to know.” Cinedigm will platform release Short Term 12 in New York at the Sunshine and the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center at the Film Society of Lincoln Center as well as the Landmark and Arclight in Los Angeles this weekend. “We will expand in those markets and add Boston, Philadelphia, Washington and others in the coming weeks,” said Scordino. ” We have 20-plus markets booked [to date]. We’re prepared to support the film and expand as necessary. The speed isn’t our first priority.”

John Gallagher, Jr. is a great actor.

I saw him live on Broadway when he was performing in Green Day's American Idiot musical and I was floored.

I may check this out when it's available via VOD.

Second best film of the year so far, imo (next to Before Midnight) :

Quote:

Short Term 12 (2013)
dir. Destin Cretton
The Good: Brie Larson shines in an award-worthy performance as a supervisor of a foster home for at-risk teenagers. Larson's Grace is all calm and composed on the outside, but in reality, she's been battling some really dark inner demons of her own, internalizing the pain, and is on the verge of a meltdown. You'll empathize with her. You'll fall for her. You'll instantly become a fan. This is her Martha Marcy May Marlene. This is her Winter's Bone. Superb supporting turns from John Gallagher Jr., Rami Malek, and Alex Calloway, as well as a couple of breakout performances from Kaitlyn Dever and Keith Stanfield. Refreshingly believable and naturalistic aesthetic. Excellent character development. All the kids and supervisors are so fleshed out, you end up being emotionally invested in each and every one of them. Revelatory writing and direction by Destin Cretton, who based the film on his real-life experiences while working at a short term care facility. Favorite moments are Mason's (Gallagher) anecdotes, all the scenes involving newcomer Nate (Malek), Marcus' (Stanfield) emotionally raw and heartfelt rap, and Jayden's (Dever) octopus story -- hands down, the most depressing "children's story" ever written.

The Bad: Nothing major.

The Bottom Line: Other than Richard Linklater's incredible sequel Before Midnight, Short Term 12 is the only film this year to make me truly care about its characters. Characters you'll smile and laugh along with during their fleeting moments of happiness. Characters you'll feel really shitty for when they're down in the dumps. Characters who'll deeply move you. Characters who'll stay with you. Characters who feel so real, you'll forget what you're watching isn't a documentary -- it's all just acting, and some really ****ing good acting at that. Recommended.

This had a respectable opening last weekend. I hope it continues to expand solidly. Too bad Brie Larson doesn't stand a chance at a Best Actress nomination. Maybe had it been released by a bigger indie distributor. Though I would be wiling to bet she'll get an Independent Spirit Award nomination.

I just found out this was playing at a city 2 hours away back in late September. If I knew that I would've drove there.

My drive for this would be 45 minutes. Don't know if this film is worth it, but I usually have some shopping to do in downtown Toronto anyways. I might go Sunday/Monday.
