I never watched OZ when it was originally on (never had HBO/cable), but did catch some episodes on DVD off & on over the years. Back in 2014, I made a point of watching the entire series. Wow. Extremely powerful, horrific, bleak, and disturbing documentary-like series that seemed (and probably was) a realistic look at the prison system. One of my favorite sequences in the show (that I think was in every episode) was when the character in the wheelchair (Harold Perrineau) had a monologue about prison system facts - very informative & educational, and also depressing. I definitely find this series a lot more realistic & bleaker than more current shows like Orange is the New Black (which is an intentional dra-medy) or the reality show 60 Days in (which seems intentionally sanitized).

I would definitely be all for this show on Blu, but am not sure it will ever happen. The DVD's are acceptable, but it would be nice to see this great series in high-def.
Oz is one of HBO's most wanted TV series for a blu-ray release, along with a few of HBO's movies such as: No Escape, The Hitcher, and The Night Flier.

The problem I see is that HBO is very disrespectful of OAR, and part of what makes Oz work is the "smaller" 1.33:1 aspect ratio. If HBO cropped it, much of the show would probably look like garbage, and obviously, there's no other way to get the show to 1.78:1. I watched the show when it was rebroadcast in full on HBO Zone HD a few years back, and was pleased but shocked to find that the SD masters were upscaled and presented in 1.33:1.

Of course, if HBO had any sense, they'd do the show proud, and release it in 1.33:1 HD, but I doubt that will ever happen, unless someone else with sense is allowed to oversee the project.

That, and the fact that if you binge watch this show, you'd probably want to kill yourself afterwards, is most likely what will keep this great show DVD-only.

I could do without the prison rape in my life.

...my life has too much prison rape as it is.

Agreed. OZ is definitely a show that needs to be seen in the OAR, no question.

And, no way is OZ a show anyone should ever binge watch. I could only get through 1-2 episodes at a time, and that was it.

Yeah good that HBO released Deadwood, Rome, The Wire and The Soprano.

BUT we need Six Feet Under and Carnivale.

I also liked In Treatment and am really interested in Big Love - an HBO show with Bill Paxton, Chloe Sevigny, Grace Zabryskie and Harry Dean Stanton?! Holy cow!!

Any news on this?

I've been watching The Wire on Blu-ray and it looks great. Oz really needs to be given that same treatment. Didn't Oz pretty much start it all? (serial dramas as we know them today)

If they ever prep HD masters, you'll see them on HBO Go before it gets a blu, so I'd suggest keeping your expectations on "No" until/unless that happens.

Oz was filmed with 16 mm cameras (just like The Shield), so a remaster like the one made for it could also be done for Oz.

It's hard enough to get HBO to release current shows on Blu-ray these days, I wouldn't hold out much hope for Oz I'm afraid.

I fully support the idea of performing a full HD restoration of Oz.

Unapologetic thread bump

DVD series is currently £30 on Amazon. If I purchase it, think it will lead to an announcement shortly that a blu ray set is on the way ?
