Germany Jack the Ripper (Jess Franco/Klaus Kinski)

Jack the Ripper Blu-ray

Coming to Germany from Ascot Elite. Street date is September 24th.

Quote:
The inimitable Klaus Kinski (Fitzcarraldo, Aquirre) is back as Jack the Ripper, the world's most notorious serial killer. In this classic tale of horror and perversion, the infamous Jack the Ripper terrorizes the East End of London of the late 19th century by killing and mutilating prostitutes. Scotland Yard assigns Inspector Selby (Andreas Mannkopff), a young and ambitious police commissioner, to the case. As his investigation goes nowhere and public pressure rises, his beautiful girlfriend Cynthia (Josephine Chaplin) decides to help him out. She poses as a hooker and secretly visits the bars where the victims of this mysterious killer were last seen. When Cynthia suddenly faces the cold blue eyes of the killer, she intuitively knows that only a miracle can save her now!

Award-winning director Jess Franco (Count Dracula, Necromicon) is considered by many as a major force behind the New European Cinema of the Seventies.
Also coming to Blu-ray on the same date is Franco's The 1000 Shades of Doriana Gray.

According to Ascot Elite's web site, it looks like both releases will have English audio tracks:

Jack the Ripper

Die Marquise von Sade

They should. The English tracks are actually official, not just dubs.

The DVD releases were very impressive for their time, but if these are done right they should look lovely.

I will probably pick up both, then. Nothing like films with generous sex and nudity in 1080p, and Amazon.de's prices are tempting...

They are actually very well made. I think this is Franco's best period.

It will be interesting to see exactly what ends up on these discs because the DVD of Jack the Ripper Image Entertainment released quite some time ago in the U.S. had very good supplemental features. (I see there are some extras listed on the German site, but let's see what ends up on the discs). I believe it has been OOP for quite some time now.

Also, there are quite a few films in the Anchor Bay Collection of Franco films in the UK that apparently have received new transfers. This set:

Unfortunately, in the UK these are cut. There are Swiss releases of these films that are not cut. (I have to check which ones were out). Anyhow, this specific period, the 60s up to the very late 70s, is where, in my opinion, you get Franco's best work.

It is also where Klaus Kinski's work becomes very...different.

By the way, McCrutchy, if you enjoy Kinski, you should get this 2DVD set below while it is available. This film will not make it to Blu-ray.

"Die Marquise von Sade" is a beautiful and sensual movie. I wonder if it is the hardcore or softcore version.
